there you go....

RKDinOKC 11-16-2011 10:40 AM

Just got back from our wellness workshop. Says anything not lot fed is better for you. They are not pushing only eat 5% animal protein yet. Just real big on the no transfat thing.

i did a tiny amount of research on what causes meat to be tough. it pretty much amounts to the age of the animal. there are other factors, like where the cut came from, etc., but age is the biggie.

i happen to know that the meat i have came from a trophy elk. thus, i am guessing that the animal had a bit of age and size to him.

oh, i am SURE that is true. grass fed is much healthier/leaner than grain fed.

Porsche-poor 11-16-2011 10:42 AM

I have to agree with you on that one. But elk is better tasting than deer in my book. Elk are grazers they eat grass, deer forage and eat whatever they find. I grew up in Bend the deer eat pine needles and sage brush so they make about a 100lbs of jerky....

RKDinOKC 11-16-2011 10:43 AM

Friend of mine only eats meat he kills. He takes his deer with a knife.

nynor 11-16-2011 10:49 AM

i had some deer in nebraska. oh, man, it was good. better than beef. of course it was big and fat as it had been eating corn right out of the field and was shot at fifty yards from a blind.

the deer around here, mulies, is pretty hit and miss. i've had some that was okay and some that was inedible. like you said, they eat pine needles and sagebrush and mesquite and who knows what else.

richard, a knife? really?

RKDinOKC 11-16-2011 10:51 AM

I can't imagine getting close enough to take a deer with a knife, let alone stabbing the thing.

nynor 11-16-2011 10:54 AM

i can imagine getting that close, as i've gotten that close. the problem is that they have these pointy antlers and they are strong and mean. count me out. i'll shoot 'em with a rifle.

RKDinOKC 11-16-2011 10:54 AM

He hunts year round and says guns make too much noise and people notice someone sneaking around with a bow.

nynor 11-16-2011 10:54 AM

okay, off to buy cheap beer for braising. i am NOT going to use my good homebrew for this.

ah.... so he is poaching?

RKDinOKC 11-16-2011 11:05 AM

Claims it is legal if he is not using a gun or bow.

He did ask permission to hunt on my brother's land before taking anything. Brother said it was okay as long as he didn't use a gun, he just grinned real big and said great.

Also likes rabbit, squirrel, and frogs.

RKDinOKC 11-16-2011 11:07 AM

He never mentioned fishing or noodling.

RKDinOKC 11-16-2011 11:15 AM

Didn't hunt much growing up, we always just went fishing.

Icemaster 11-16-2011 11:15 AM

Does he use some kind of snare to immobilize them?

RKDinOKC 11-16-2011 11:22 AM

My granddad kept us in deer and elk. I remember us having stew and chili from it, but don't remember it being any different than any other stew or chili mom fixed.

GH85Carrera 11-16-2011 11:23 AM

I hunt for my meat at the grocery store or the restaurants.

My brother is a big time deer hunter. He uses a bow & arrow. His record was 18 in one year. All legal. The limit is one buck, one doe per day in possession.

RKDinOKC 11-16-2011 11:25 AM

Talked about using a flashlight and gigging the frogs with a pointed stick. Didn't ask how he got the rabbit and squirrel. He probably used a sling shot.

i don't think so. unless the animal is damaging crops. even if your dog attacks and kills a deer, it better be on some kind of farmland that is being damaged by the deer. otherwise, you are in trouble.
