How do you expect to do any meaningful suspension design (wasn't that supposed to be some sort of senior project?) if you've got an asymmetrical, not-true, not-even-done-to-plan frame like that?

We are going to build a new frame. That has been the plan since before the last one was complete. That one was done in a rush (with non-welders doing welding sometimes) since we procrastinated and have not that many people on the team -- with some leaving in the middle of the project. There was also a wait for the batteries to be finalized that prompted the procrastination.

Haha! He can't. Regular batteries can't keep up with the power drain.

Yeah, I would need a 96V, 400A battery.

They can if you hook 'em up to a gererator. ;)

Better have a long extension cord!

Are you really sure you're an engineer? You sound like what I* would sound like were I trying to hotwire an electric project car.

* My understanding of electricity runs somewhere between that of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison.

I'm a mechanical engineer. The thing wasn't working so I checked all the connections and switches and when that didn't work I figured I would let the EE deal with it. Hotwiring is kind of what it felt like. :)

Multimeter!

Flieger 07-17-2012 10:22 PM

Blinky light is just what the name we have given it is. It is really freaking annoying.

I did not need a multimeter to tell me the controller was not energized. There were no status lights on and my computer was saying it was off.

slodave 07-17-2012 10:23 PM

Sigh. Check upstream of the controller!

Noah930 07-17-2012 10:25 PM

OK, Dave, whattya doin' tomorrow? What say we road trip up to SLO and figure this thing out? Even more fun, as it's not our project (or money) at stake. I'll bring the multimeter. And speaker wire.

I don't really know what I should be looking for and where.

slodave 07-17-2012 10:27 PM

I'm about ready to!

Max, you have those emergency cut off switches? Are they in the "on" position? Unplug the power connectors to the controller, plug a multimeter on the car side (that's connected to the battery) and see if you have voltage.

Come on up! We'd love the help. In the fall we are going to do more recruiting. I think we should try in the Ag Bis department...

This is exactly why you need an old motorcycle, Max.

You are looking for any signs of life aka voltage!

slodave 07-17-2012 10:29 PM

If Alarick and I do show up and fix it, we get first dibs on driving it. ;)

Like I said in the first post, I made sure all the switches were in the on position. I did not want to mess around in the area of the controller connections since they are next to the big welding cable that carries the motor current. You should see how hard it is to get the nuts and bolts on the terminals in there. Space is tight and I don't want to get zapped.

Because the electrics are simple?

Fine by me. As long as you guys fit...

Flieger 07-17-2012 10:31 PM

If you guys do fix it we can all go out to the bar of your choosing for a celebration.
