I was part time at my old firm and only went full time the last 4 years because this firm insisted. Since we are not busy, to say the least, I have brought up going part time on the premise of saving money several times to my superiors. It seems as if they'd rather I sit here paid and not busy all day. I don't really udnerstand it but, whatever. i'd much rather be here all day and slammed.

My commute: put on shoes, rain pants, booties, jacket, balaclava, gloves, helmet. (2 min.) Pick up bag, get bike from garage, switch on lights - three red rear-blinking, four white forward-steady, I usually ride in rain and darkness and want to be VISIBLE. (2 min.) Ride 2 mile flat road, turn, 1/2 mile slight downhill (race buses here), fast S-curve (pass cars here), sprint 300 m up bridge (try to stay ahead of cars as long as possible), cool down 300 m down bridge, ride 1 mile through downtown (time the lights), down ramp into parking garage. (10 min.) Lock bike, take elevator to lobby then to office, take off dripping rain gear, sit down. (2 min.) Usually get heart rate to 160+ on the ride, feel great and wide awake, can make it an hour before the first cup of coffee.

I'd rather be busy as well. Either here or at home. But it does beat unemployment.

Of course. I've updated my resume and sent a few out because I don't think my office will be around in a couple of months.

now that sucks.

I have been here since 2000 (round two). I just get sort hours in times like this. I get more done at home and with the band that way.

There is an invention called the CAR. It allows me to go to work dry and comfortable. In the winter it has heat. In the summer it has AC. It works great.

Strangely enough, we have those to. However, their density on our roads negates the mobile aspect of the invention.

Hate to even mention my commute. It's measured in feet and seconds in duration.

Ah yes, I remember Portland. It is in the state where the drivers are not smart enough to pump their own gas. The car might explode if a trained professional does not pump the gas for you. They do have a lot of good beer up there however.

several years ago I drove the 911 down there. I had fun explaining that if they screwed up the paint any more around the filler spout I'd kill someone. Most let me insert the hose but they still had to do the pumping.

wow, I didn't think any service stations sere still actually "serving" I thought they had all gone by the way of "its you car you fill it up yourself!", "then pay me for the privilege of doing that!"

Only time anyone helps anyone else is if it is some poor old dear who doesn't know how to do it, or used to know yesterday but has since forgotten, Alzheimers does that to yah!!

Portland needs to get into the 21st century, but that being said, if it is pi55ing down with rain, I want to live in Portland if I need fuel!!!

When we were in Portland in 2006 we flew in. I rented a Hyundai for the week. The first time I pulled up to a pump I did my normal routine. The dude came running up and said that's illegal! I said what buying gas?

Every state has some really stupid laws. That has to be right at the top of the list of all the dumb laws in the country. 48 other states and even the Washington DC politicians are allowed to pump their own gas with no problems.

NJ is another they-pump-your-gas-service state, IIRC.

It is the LAW in Oregon. Self Service is against the law! It should be called the employ a dropout law. I think New Jersey is the only other state with that law.
