Markus, glad you survived the storm. I hope that Koi pond is deep enough to keep the fish safe all winter. We are supposed to have some storms here today. The high is supposed to be in the 70s so it is not a winter storm. The possibility of big hail out west by Sid is in the forecast. Maybe tennis ball size hail!

Good Tuesday morning everyone.

Thanks, guys.

Yes I was lucky. A lot of people had costly damage to their properties.
Yes, Glen, the pond is 2,5m deep so it will hopefully be sufficient during the winters. Its not yet finished however so no fish until spring next year.

When we built our Koi pond several years ago the experts all said to let it age in a week or two before we put in any fish. We built it in the spring and filled it with well water. The next night it was a toad orgy. Toads we humping and laying eggs by the thousands. It was astonishing. By the time we got the fish in there there were zillions of tadpoles. When the tadpoles turned into toads we would go out every evening and pick up 50 or 60 baby toads. I put them in a bucket and went down to a local creek and sang born free. We had toads everywhere that year. The next year the fish were big enough to keep up with most of the population explosion of toads.

A couple of years ago I did not see one single toad. This year we only had a few. Lots of lizards, and some teeny tiny snakes that eat earthworms. They are not much bigger than a worm.

Glen, that sounds like paradise!

Any pics of the pond? Is it concrete or liner? What kind of filters?

This is from a couple of years ago. It is rubber lined. I have a water well to water the yard and I add water as needed with the well. In the heat of summer it can evaporate a an inch or so in a day.

You can see some fishing line we have strung up. That is supposed to keep the fish eating birds away. A few years ago a Great Blue Heron landed and ate most of our fish. Since we put up the fishing line they have not returned. The migratory birds are Federally protected so to disturb their meal of our expensive fish is against the law. Fortunately our dog did not read the law or we might have lost all the fish.

The filters are like a swimming pool. Right in front of the pump is a basket to catch debris and a filter to catch stuff. Up top at the waterfall are two filters in the overflow bucket. We just rinse them out every few weeks with a garden hose. It is a fairly small pond with just 6 Koi. They can keep up with the tadpoles so there is no toad population explosion.

Thats beautiful Glen! Really like what you have done with the rocks around the edges. Yes, I understand there may be a predator problem. I will have to figure it out when its finished next summer. Thanks for posting that pic!

where I live those things are a no no. That attract rats and the neighbors don't like live fire exercises.

We have Dachshunds for any rat problem.

We really have had no rodent problems with it at all. Just toads, and that is not a real big problem.
