As you see in the full length video on my blog, they set the track up so you could do 3 or 4 laps consecutively. Let you warm your tires up a bit. The problem comes in that with the track set up with two loops, you could get yourself a bit disoriented. That was on my 3rd set of laps, so I was good and loopy when I missed the left right split. Oh well, still lots of fun on a sunny day! Now I need new Rcomps. I can't find anything in 225/50/15, so I will have to bump up to bigger wheels. Likely 17", hoping I can find some good turbo twists somewhere. |

The very first autocross I ever attended was called an enduro autocross. It was back in 1976. Every run was 5 laps of the course. I had 6 runs so I was chewing up rubber like mad. My old 914 was at full USA ride height for that one. I could get the front tire to lift on many of the corners. I was very slow.
One of the guys that knew how to set up a car came over and made some suggestions. He helped me over the year with setup info and driving instructions. I had the car lowered to Euro height and finally got some better rubber. It was not long before I was faster than the 911s of the day. A brand new 1976 stock 911 was no match for a good autocross. Only when they opened up the track could they beat me. I was FTD fairly often.

My first autocross I was in a stock 1988 944 Turbo S. I got 2nd....from last. The only person with slower times than mine was a girl in a 914 that kept getting lost in the course. Even with my slow times I was told I won specifically "Because my smile was so big you could see me smiling even though I was wearing a full face helmet."
![]() Took a couple of years of both setup changes and learning to drive in anger before I got fast enough to start setting FTD. Upgrades included a second set of forged club sports with Goodyear R1s. I don't know about the availability of 16 in Rcomps, but the 16in Club Sport wheels that came on the 944 Turbo S are very very light and look more correct on a 944...Not the Design 90, but the Forged Club Sport Wheels. ![]() I did go to 18in Carrera lightweights for more tire choices. ![]() Going up in rim size from 15 to 16 and 16 to 17 slows acceleration by .1 seconds 0-60 per inch of increase. It also increases cornering G's by .2 G. With the same brand of tires. However, this is not true when going from 17 to 18 because only better tires are available for 18s. The acceleration time does not increase, they stay the same as the 17s. With 18s the cornering G's increase by the same .2 G. This was according to testing result done by one of the car magazine, don't remember which one though.

The guy who got my 87 S put some turbo 17's from a Boxster and he had to roll the fenders and they still rubbed.

interesting. i never had that problem. i have four sets of wheels. 2 sets are the cup 2's (the real porsche ones, not the knockoffs) and one set are twists from a boxter. also the set of wheels that i believe are D90's (never mounted on my car). i've never had any of them rub.

well, there may be other issues at hand. my 951 is stock height, so if the 944S was lowered, that MIGHT do it.
that said, i've autocrossed with these wheels and driven that car HARD and never had them rub.

The forged ones look like this... Notice the groove on the rim between the spokes and the spokes blend even with the rim.
![]() The design90s have a step from the spoke to the rim. ![]() Only the 88 951 S and 89 928GT had the forged club sports. The 89up 951 and 90up 928GT went to Design 90s.

My 88 951S was lowered enough that sometimes the black plastic part of the bottom side skirt that came down just in front of the rear wheel was scraped flat.

Forgot eat plugs. Got trapped at the front of the stage for Big Head Todd. Ears are ringing worse than normal.
Jeremy kept trying to set me up with these two older chicks next to me from the stage. Cut them in half and there would have been four of them.

On a side note... Looks like I am going to build a lap steel guitar for Jeremy.
