So Jim, how many days left for you?

Oh Haha 06-30-2015 05:17 AM

I always use 93 octane fuel in my SC. It's a ROW car so it has more compression. It could probably run with 87 but I would rather be safe with it.

RKDinOKC 06-30-2015 05:20 AM

Yep, tell her I said gradcundulations!

Been workin at the same company for 35 years. Think you should be able to retire after that long no matter how old you are.

GH85Carrera 06-30-2015 05:21 AM

I figure I can buy a few gazillion gallons of the cost bumps from regular to premium for the cost of a hole in a piston. I don't even think about anything else.

The Elky just gets regular but it is just a base level small block 350. It has zero issues and never gets above 3,200 RPM and rarely sees 2,800 RPM.

From what I have read don't torque the head studs. That often is the cause of them breaking. If they are not loose and broken, leave them alone.

It does sound like detonation my be your problem. Back when my original engine in the El Camino was past 250,000 miles it would ping under load with regular. I had to run the middle grade just to keep it from detonating. When I took it apart after 301,000 miles it had just little bits of carbon on top of the pistons. I guess it was enough to raise the compression and cause pinging.

My suggestion is ren a few tanks of premium and see if the noise goes away. Then change back to the regular. If the noise comes back, you know the problem.

I did assume that messing with something that isn't broken could put me in a whole new world of hurt...

I am going to double check the timing tonight and pump some premium in and see what happens... Frankly, it's been against my grain to put 87 in but the thing has the same compression as my push mower:confused:

Yea, but you mower never get close to 6,000 RPM.

I can promise there is some carbon buildup on the pistons and the heads. It just takes one piston or head to have a little too much and it is ping time.

RKDinOKC 06-30-2015 05:57 AM

Dude, it's not just compression ratio that determines octane requirements, also has to do with piston stroke, engine load, max cylinder pressure, cylinder temps, air fuel mixture, and timing. Any high performance engine should be using higher octane fuel to run more aggressive timing.

Carbon build up soaks up fuel and oil and becomes a heat sink on top of the piston increasing not only compression ratio ie max cylinder pressure, but also cylinder temperatures.

Pre-detonation is rarely due to just the timing being off.

Well Glen, unless something changes between now and then, we expect to retire on your birthday. SmileWavy

GH85Carrera 06-30-2015 06:02 AM

Cool.

RKDinOKC 06-30-2015 06:13 AM

Would like to find out which neighbor reported my lawn to the code nazis. Would like to sneak out in the middle of the night and write something in their yard with engine oil. That way it will not only show up as dead, but will also show up when it greens back up growing faster than the rest of the grass.

Would like to find out which neighbor reported my lawn to the code nazis. My whole yard only took 4 bags so it wasn't THAT overgrown!

Or, since Pepper pees on command, start taking her for walks that she just happens to have to pee when we pass their yard.

morning all. retirement? what is that?

flipper35 06-30-2015 07:10 AM

Richard, ever seen Fight Club? Just sayin'.

flipper35 06-30-2015 07:10 AM

Retirement is that age when you decide not to have a career but take a job so you don't get bored.

rats that's was years ago.

Porsche-poor 06-30-2015 07:17 AM

and I missed it.

GH85Carrera 06-30-2015 07:27 AM

Like many people I never wanted a career, I just want the steady paycheck. ;)

RKDinOKC 06-30-2015 07:44 AM

Was thinkin more along the movie neighbors.

I'm too nice a guy to actually do anything like that.

Unlike the youth of today, I consider the consequences of some actions would only make the situation worse.

They will get their come upins. Those types always do.

911SauCy 06-30-2015 07:53 AM

Alright guys.

If different octane and timing verification doesn't pan out, any good methods (other than using water which I'd prefer to not) for decarbonizing that doesn't require tear-down?

RKDinOKC 06-30-2015 07:57 AM

Had my 90 928 GT de-carboned at a local Porsche shop. They used a contraption that bead blasted with walnut hulls thru the plug holes.

The local Porsche dealer uses some kind of solvent thing. But when they did my Boxster S they didn't change the oil afterwards and it spun a rod bearing within a couple of weeks.
