I always use 93 octane fuel in my SC. It's a ROW car so it has more compression. It could probably run with 87 but I would rather be safe with it.

I figure I can buy a few gazillion gallons of the cost bumps from regular to premium for the cost of a hole in a piston. I don't even think about anything else.
The Elky just gets regular but it is just a base level small block 350. It has zero issues and never gets above 3,200 RPM and rarely sees 2,800 RPM.

I am going to double check the timing tonight and pump some premium in and see what happens... Frankly, it's been against my grain to put 87 in but the thing has the same compression as my push mower

I can promise there is some carbon buildup on the pistons and the heads. It just takes one piston or head to have a little too much and it is ping time.

Dude, it's not just compression ratio that determines octane requirements, also has to do with piston stroke, engine load, max cylinder pressure, cylinder temps, air fuel mixture, and timing. Any high performance engine should be using higher octane fuel to run more aggressive timing.
Carbon build up soaks up fuel and oil and becomes a heat sink on top of the piston increasing not only compression ratio ie max cylinder pressure, but also cylinder temperatures. Pre-detonation is rarely due to just the timing being off.

Well Glen, unless something changes between now and then, we expect to retire on your birthday.

Would like to find out which neighbor reported my lawn to the code nazis. Would like to sneak out in the middle of the night and write something in their yard with engine oil. That way it will not only show up as dead, but will also show up when it greens back up growing faster than the rest of the grass.

Or, since Pepper pees on command, start taking her for walks that she just happens to have to pee when we pass their yard.

Retirement is that age when you decide not to have a career but take a job so you don't get bored.

Like many people I never wanted a career, I just want the steady paycheck.

Was thinkin more along the movie neighbors.
I'm too nice a guy to actually do anything like that. Unlike the youth of today, I consider the consequences of some actions would only make the situation worse. They will get their come upins. Those types always do.

Alright guys.
If different octane and timing verification doesn't pan out, any good methods (other than using water which I'd prefer to not) for decarbonizing that doesn't require tear-down?

Had my 90 928 GT de-carboned at a local Porsche shop. They used a contraption that bead blasted with walnut hulls thru the plug holes.
The local Porsche dealer uses some kind of solvent thing. But when they did my Boxster S they didn't change the oil afterwards and it spun a rod bearing within a couple of weeks.
