rant on

Have a web and email hosting service, Zipbang.com. It hosts web and email for 4 different companies, one of them being the Aerial Photography company that Glen works for.

Have a very old Mac xServe that used to be the Company I work for, Kimray's mail server. When Kimray went to Exchange there were two mailing lists still on the xServe because Exchange don't do that. One is an opt in literature update list, the other is an opt in discussion email list for our sales people and distributors both with about 200 users. The xServer hardware is getting long in the tooth and needs replacement.

I've looked at several options and the least of which is around $3000 a year for hosting or about the same for software to run on your own server.

The Zipbang mailserver can host up to 10 mailing lists FREE as part of licensing and has none right nw. So, I offered to host Kimray's two small mailing lists Free. Our, oh so smart Head of IT says he does not want to use Zipbang because it is not an Enterprise Solution. What the FCUK? Not and Enterprise Solution AND give me a break it's only two mailing lists!!!

I asked him what the difference is between hosting with Zipbang and some service that is going to charge them $3000. Again with the Enterprise Solution excuse.

He says we can't get support. What am I chopped liver? And I can't get support for the software I license. What?

He say's well you host it from home and it's not secure data center, what if there is a fire or tornado. Said I can put a lock on the closet. Which is a fire/tornado proof and the Kimray data center.

As far as my server goes it is better than backed up, it is redundant. I have a second server set as a failover. The server drives are not just backed up, they are bootable backups done nightly with hourly incremental backups. Thanks to Glen I have monthly off-site backups for the mail server.

In putting in my battery backups I checked with Cox Business first and if power goes out Internet goes out whether I keep my router up or not. And Kimray is the same. Every time their power has gone out their servers are not available. So they are set to just safely shut down the servers if the power is out longer than 10 minutes.

Said the only different between Zipbang and anyone else is I don't charge a bunch for being in an office building or maintaining a store front.

This guy is going to run Kimray into bankruptcy with his if it ain't expensive it ain't "Enterprise" BS.

I suppose, Jim.

We have mixed feelings on this. It's good he will pass but if he can't do the work he will fail down the road as the lessons become more difficult.

We are thinking about summer school or at least a tutor of some sort. Even though I am home we butt heads when we try to work on school stuff.

Had to really learn patience helping Mom after she started losing it. It didn't help that she would listen to anyone else except me.

Yes. He'll still get extra help when needed. I'm hoping the middle school staff is as caring as the elementary has been.

When we moved Hickam, AFB in Hawaii we went to Radford high school. The school gave my brother and myself aptitude tests to see where we were since they did not have a computer to transfer any transcripts from the many previous schools we had attended.

My brother "sandbagged" a lot so he would have easy classes and get high school over with. On his first day as a senior in high school the teacher did the introductions and then started teaching the ABCs. He decided he sandbagged a bit too hard but they wanted to see some real tests. Ned less to say he di know his alphabet and basic arithmetic. They bumped him up fast and the teacher got the credit.

I wanted to take the photography class that was available for students with grades good enough so I had to do better on my aptitude tests.

One of the biggest challenges was state history. Naming the counties in Hawaii is not real hard once you understand the spelling of Hawaiian names. I Texas naming the counties is beyond a human! Oklahoma has 77 counties which is hard, Alabama has counties that are pronounced nothing like they are spelled.

They teachers for special needs used to be more caring when I was in school. When in 7th grade after the 1st 9wks I got moved to 9th grade band. That made my home room band and juggled my schedule for geography. The smart kids had geography for home room and the slower kids geography was the same time as the 7th grade band. That put me in the geography class that had the special needs kids in it. The work wasn't nearly as advanced, but the teacher did care a lot more and was a lot more patient. We also got to watch spaghetti western movies on Fridays. I have no idea where they got all the movies that played on the schools 16mm projectors. Part of the fun is we would call out when we saw something that didn't fit the period like car tracks, cars, planes, telephone poles versus telegraph etc. Then we would rewind and watch those parts in slow motion. It was funny to go back and forth over the horse riding fighting scenes where you would see the guy fall off his horse and roll into a box to keep from being trampled.

I have some minor paperwork to deal with, but all the major stuff is done.

We were recruited with one region in mind and they just finished clearing some red tape to go friendly with a local Gvt so now they're working the shipping companies for contracts. Fortunately, things just keep getting crazier in that region.

Sorry...don't intend to be an idiot. Careful, think it's contagious or something.
