I was told that during the land run there were hardly any tress from Tulsa to OKC. It was all grassland. Most all of the trees in that area have grown up since then. That is why a lot of areas are mostly smaller blackjack or scrub oaks.

Oklahoma got the panhandle because nobody else wanted it and Oklahoma was just a bunch of Indian territory anyway.
When I was growing up visitors always seemed surprised there weren't Cowboys and Indians everywhere.

Actually Oklahoma got the panhandle because of slavery. The feds decreed no slaves north of where the top of current Texas is now. Texas lost that area to become a state. The latitude of the southern Kansas and Colorado are a line of the norther border of Oklahoma and they just let the panhandle stay part of the unassigned lands until statehood in 1907.

The only other thing I remember from there is the Arkansas river was mostly just mud with some water here and there.

My dad was born in 1930 in the "packing town" part of OKC. He was born and grew up in a small house that was not much nicer than my storage building. No electricity, the only water was a hand pump in the street that several neighbors shared. They did have their own private privy behind the house. He was amazed when they moved into a "modern" house with indoor plumbing and electricity in 1941. His parents did not have air conditioning until the mid 60s and dad had long ago left home to get married and join the Air Force. I remember visiting that house and of course we did not have air conditioning either.
We did not have a house with AC until 1971 (Montgomery, Alabama) and the base kept a padlock on the compressor until it was over 90 for several days. I can remember making a promise to myself that someday I will have a house that has central AC and I can keep it as cool as I want, whenever I want. I did that in 1980. I ain't ever going back! Well, my wife won't let me keep it that cool always, but it is never HOT in my house.

we have a/c and I love it. my allergies make fresh air to be a bother so the a/c and heat are run thru an electronic filter.

We of course have central heat and air at home. We never ever open the windows except to clean them. We both have enough allergies we don't need any more pollen and allergens.
Oh goodie! The job we fly of the other city they have decided they do want the river form 2010 Photoshopped onto the new image. Golly that will be fun. River transplants are us!

My folks didn't have a/c in the house I grew up and the house they bought on Lake Huron didn't need it as there was always a breeze.
We just had it installed in our house in 2013 and it was worth every dollar. My wife gets crabby when it gets over 70, especially if it's muggy. It doesn't bother me as much but it is nice for sleeping.

Yea, AC in Michigan is nice but only needed a few weeks of the year. Houston and Phoenix would both be sleepy little communities with a few hundred residents if it were not for AC.
I lived in Oklahoma in 1967 and we had no AC at all. I never once went to a school with AC, not one in all the 11 different schools is numerous states. Now days they cancel school if the AC is not working properly because the precious snowflakes might sweat or melt. I can remember the sweat dripping off of my nose onto more than a few tests I was taking. in school and having to sleep outside on the porch to be able to sleep.

Our schools don't have A/C here but July and August you better have it in your home. 90+ and 100% humidity sucks. We were without one summer when the unit got hit by lightning and we were getting the geothermal unit put in. They told us the A/C would be cheaper than the attic fan with the geo unit. It used to run an extra $100 to $170 a month for the old unit from 1972. Now it runs about $40 for the summer. Of course our electric bill goes up in the winter but we don't have to pay for fuel oil any longer. That was tough when it was $4.00 a gallon.

Got A/C installed when I was 12. Until then we had an attic fan. The house was insulated horribly. When moved to current 1800sqft the electric and heating bills were the same as the old 900sqft.
Grandparents lived in a house that was 2 blocks off main street that the bathroom was an added on part of the back porch. Had an Aunt and Uncle that lived on a farm way out in the country that their bathroom was also a walled in converted part of the back porch. The weirdest bathroom I've ever used was at my oldest neice's. Her and her husband owned and ran the Funeral Home in Rolla MO. They lived in a house that was part of the funeral parlor. The bathroom was 16x16 and all it had in it was a claw foot tub, toilet, and a pedestal sink each in a different corner of the room. It was huge with basically nothing in it. Felt and sounded like you were going in the middle of the living room. Felt more conspicuous than going to the bathroom in the drunk tank.

Growing up, my family did not have AC in a house until we moved to Texas in 1967. And only used that when it really got hot and humid. After I was born, we moved from Wisconsin to Tucson to Okinawa and the Philippines. Off base at Clark on Luzon was really brutal at times without it. In Fairbanks, Alaska and New Hampshire was not a problem. On Guam it would have been nice but nights were cool enough without it. When my folks retired and move to a very rural plot of land in central Texas, they never had it. They slept on the screened porch in the summer. After they passed away and my brothers and I took over, the window units went in real fast. We now use the property as our weekend retreat and all meet up there for Thanksgiving, New Years and Easter. Sometimes 4th of July too. Still not enough AC equipped bedrooms so we rotate who gets to sleep on the porch in hot weather.

We have a big portible A/C unit that cools the downstairs fairly well on really hot days. It is louder than I would like, but we don't have the house currently set up with any ductwork for central heat or A/C. Between getting a new furnace, A/C, and all the ducting, it would be about $10K, so we will wait till we retire (8-10 years) when we are home more than we are now.
