Think everyone that has a "Manager" and works in a company large enough to have an HR department can identify with Dilbert.

Well it doesn't look like morning here.
The horizon isn't even getting lighter yet.
According to the calendar it does seem to be a Friday.
The last Friday of this calendar month, October.

so...
Good Friday Morning!

I was looking in my spam box and see that my Chase account needs to be updated. And the notice came from Germany. Yea, that sounds legit. Now first I need to get a Chase account so I can then update it.

Another one was supposed to be from Amazon. It was actually from acceptbonuscard.top. I am thinking that one is another spearfish attempt.

Dang scammers.

Really happy with the performance of the Canit spam filter I'm using on my email hosting service.

Since the company I work for has started making a profit again proposed they use Mimecast for antispam and user security training. We paid $4000 for training and testing material for network security for email and surfing. For $7000 the Mimecast service provides security training, but also anti-spam/antivirus, and it turns real phishing attemps and virus attempts into tests for the users. If they click on or try to open the bogus stuff it records it warns them, records it and marks them for a training refresher. It also does the same for web surfing by sending all the traffic through their proxy.

Sounded really good to me!

I remember "back in the old days" when the internet was new and we still had dial up at work I set up a Wildcat BBS for our customers to send us their files from Harvard Graphics. We made the files into 35 MM slides and they could do a presentation years before Microsoft even thought about PowerPoint.

Anyway one of my regular customers was a spinal surgeon and was working on a new technique he had developed. Almost no one ran an antivirus because there was no need to. At 38,000 baud the bandwidth was not there to do much virus wise. That doctor was fascinated with the subject of antivirus programs. He was asking if I thought the future would have all computers running a anti-virus and if and have regular updates to keep out new viruses. I figured it would happen to the Microsoft and IBM side since there was so many possible variations of software and hardware. The Macs were such a tiny part of the market then they would be safe, like Commodore 64s and the other also rans.

It is ironic that Apple was days away from running out of money and missing payroll when Bill Gates loaned them a bunch of money for a big chunk of stock. When Steve Jobs came back and had his first public new product announcement he started the show with a introduction of Bill Gates on the big screen. The Mac faithful booed him. Bill Gates kept Apple alive only so Microsoft was not a complete monopoly. That was when the feds were looking into breaking up Microsoft.

Now Apple is richer than Microsoft so I guess Gate's plan worked. Only because of Steve Jobs and his designs.

I looked it up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_Graphics

1986 is when we bought the film recorder. I had to do a lot of digging to figure out the only way to get Harvard Graphics files to work with our film recorder was to set up a special boot disk. It was a 5.25 inch floppy we gave to customers. They built the files they way they wanted and then re-booted from my floppy and it would allow them to make SCODL files. Those SCODL files were what the film recorder required to image the files. If they did not boot from the floppy the drivers needed in the config.sys and autoexec.bat would not load. If they loaded those drivers all the time it messed with all sorts of other systems on the computer. Back when most computers had just one meg of memory and every K of ram was needed only the basic drivers were loaded.

It is almost hard to believe we used computers with 640K or a full megabyte of ram and a 32 MB hard drive was large. My computer had two monitors in 1986. The main system monitor was monochrome. Black background and amber text. The other monitor did a full color of the slide preview. We paid 5 grand for a IBM AT 6 MHz with a 32 MB hard drive and 1 meg of RAM.

It's funny that the first viruses were on a Mac. The first one was called Scores because it would change the scores in games you played. It came from Venezuela. Me and several other have reason to believe Microsoft wrote and distributed it. The second one was WDEF and all it did was spread itself around, it added itself to the disk catalog definitions. About that time Mac did a major overhaul to the OS and went to 32 bit. None of the virus made would run and they made it very difficult to program viruses. They put out a huge bounty and still nobody was able to hack a Mac. My friend that worked at Apple told me it was possible to write a virus, but the people that could were too busy making money to mess with writing virus'.

Microsoft didn't write Power Point. It was originally Aldus Persuiasion. Then Adobe bought it to get Pagemaker from Aldus, then Microsoft bought Persuasion from Adobe. In fact, they didn't even change the program except for the splash screen for several years.

The only thing Microsoft actual wrote was Word, Excel (then called Multiplan), and a database called File. The Apple commissioned them to write for the Mac. And the programming information they got is what they used to start Windows. That's why Apple sued Microsoft and won.

The reason Apple almost went under is because they chased Steve off and the idiot they put in charge John Scully was an executive from Coke and was the one that run the company into the ground.

I am curious to see how the company does without Jobs. The latest Macbook Pros then just announced shows they are starting to do some STUPID stuff. The new laptops only have USB-C ports. No USB, No Firewire, No Thunderbolt and no SD Card. You gotta use dongles to plug any older stuff in. Not what professionals need in a portable computer. And the new touch bar seems like a silly gimmick to me, especially since I use an external keyboard and monitor.

No doubt Apple makes some great products. But they can sure make some stupid crap as well. I have never used any program as pitiful as iTunes. It is like they tried hard to make it hard to use and illogical.

My wife loves her iPad Pro. It is a neat tool. I had to really jump through some hoops to get a bunch of files on there. Her master gardening class gave her the reading materials on a USB thumb drive. All PDF files. It should be simple to transfer the files. It is a total pain. One of her professors was impressed she managed to use an iPad as a reading source for the files. The professor said she could not figure it out and had tried and asked for help.

I love my iPhone but why can't I plug in the cable from the phone to my computer and see the photos and copy them off the phone? It used to work, by one of the new OS upgrades killed that.

My iPhone still opens Photo to the import screen with all the photos I have yet to import any time I plug it into the usb port. Sounds like yours may have quit working about the time they change the name of the mac photo program from iPhoto to just Photo.

Kinda wish it would open Photo ready to import when I plug in my Panasonic camera.

I just tried it again on my XP machine and Windows 10 machine. No joy. The phone asks if I trust the computer and I answer yes. It still will not see the phone as a drive so I can copy the photos.

Did you go to "This PC" and refresh the "Devices and Drives"? After answering yes on the iPhone.

Works for me both on Win7 and Win10.

Didn't try making a shortcut of the folder on the iPhone the pics are in though.

With your metabolism I think it would be cheaper to just pay you!

The Merc sounds like a typical project car. Everything looks good and then you find out the PO put the wrong #rotor/coolant/clutch fork# in.

On more full day of work after today. Then an IT conference in Austin. Every year I wonder about going, but it is $99 if you sign up for the next year while you are still there. Hard to pass up at that price.

The conference was a week late. You missed the opportunity to go to F1 races and party so the conference would be a hangover recovery zone.

The brakes on the Cayenne Turbo are still buggered. It acts like the booster is going out. Hope replacing the booster and master fixes it and it isn't something to do with the ABS stuff or the front calipers buggered from that guy putting the wrong size rotors on the front. Sure acts like the booster is weak to me though. You can't push the pedal hard enough to brake hard enough to get the ABS to come on. They would be working great for a limo driver.

Brakes almost as bad as the Rover did when I got it. And the fuse was out that ran the pump that does the job of the booster on it.

Instead of a fluid pump to for the brake booster, Porsche uses a vacuum pump for the regular vacuum operated brake booster. The vac pump is because it is a Turbo so doesn't always have intake vacuum. The vacuum pump checks out.

It would take a lot of money to get me to go to an F1 race and I don't like parties. Parties would be OK but there are people at them.
