If the cars are self-driving hackers could lock you in, take you hostage, drive you to a unknown location, and steal a kidney.

With fridges hackers could threaten to melt the freezer if you don't pay a ransom.

With home thermostats they could either freeze of cook you depending on the season unless you pay a ransom.

With washing machines not sure what they would do. Maybe use hot and shrink all your delicates?

The problem with Internet Of Things, IOT, is security.
What good is a doorbell security camera if it uses IOT, gets hacked, and records a loop showing nobody there while the house gets robbed.

There are a LOT of future problems with the current state of IOT.

Just heard this morning that our IT department wants to go to cloud based web browser managed network security. Yikes.

Yep, that is why all the video cameras at my house are OUTSIDE. If someone hacks in and watches my backyard they will get bored real fast. Yea, they could erase the DVR or put it in a loop or crash it. Unlikely they can get through my router and the DVR login. Nothing is totally secure I guess.

RKDinOKC 10-11-2017 10:02 AM

Most of the video doorbells and some of the "Security" cameras have to be routed thru an external web site for you to be able to view it on your smartphone etc. Those are the ones using IOT.

Yea, I don't trust "the cloud" for much. My wife and I share a few photos on the iCloud and that is it. I don't use the other cloud services.

I back my phone up to my computer. Of course part of that is I have a 128 Gig iPhone and 35 Gig of my stuff on it. It would take forever and cost too much to use their cloud. I do backup my computer.

I need to set up my main computer back into a mirrored RAID like I used to have. I still can't figure out what happened to cause that one drive to have a literal melt down. I now have new 2 TB drives and I need to set up a mirror. I might just go to a mirrored pair of SSDs for speed.

GH85Carrera 10-11-2017 10:09 AM

My home security system has the phone monitoring. My DVR system is not on the internet. It does hook into my switch and it is supposed to be able to be monitored by a web system but I figure all it has to do is record. I has 7 days on there so I have time to view it and save it if I need to.

flipper35 10-11-2017 11:10 AM

Yup. There is no consensus on how to secure the IoT devices.

Maybe a hacked washing machine would flood the house. Toasters could burn it down. Both of those could be unplugged to solve the problem. Unless you arent home.

The session i was in before waa not aware of any successful hacks

RKDinOKC 10-11-2017 11:39 AM

Wouldn't work very well to get ransom though. Maybe they could be used as gateways to get to other devices on your internal network.

I hear about internet connected appliances and just wonder WHY?

Of course I said the same thing about smart phones and texting 10 years ago.

I could at least understand the concept of a text message and having a smart phone but I was cheap. I took a sip of the cool aid and was hooked since my iPhone 1.

I just can't see one single advantage to having the fridge connected to the internet. Maybe for the large families or households living in a high population area that are too lazy or busy to go to the grocery store themselves. I just can't see that for me.

Of course some of it is to make consumers feel better about spending two or three grand on a fridge. I hear most fridges have a proprietary water filter for the ice maker that cost a lot.

flipper35 10-11-2017 01:03 PM

The fridge cn call the grocery store and have it delivered. :)

GH85Carrera 10-11-2017 01:25 PM

Yea, I see Amazon and other places have grocery store delivery and they even come in and put the food in the fridge. Not gonna happen for me.

I buy a lot of fresh fruit. O like to pick out the best stuff. With bread or stuff with a short shelf life I want to dig to the back and get the product with the longest sell be date, not one that is in front for fast sale. I want to pick out the hunk of meat and not just get any old piece.

For products like TP or paper towels or soap, yea great. For fresh food, no way.

But that is just me, I have been told more than once I a grumpy old man. Get off my lawn.

flipper35 10-11-2017 01:33 PM

My comment was supposed to be green. I am using my phone and it is hard enough to see what I am typing.

RKDinOKC 10-11-2017 03:49 PM

Yep our Homeland has started delivery. It is 5.1 miles from my house.
There is a place called Crest that is 4.7 miles and a Walmart Supercenter 4.8 miles, but they are always very crowded..

Delivery seems fine for dry goods, just don't see it for the typical refrigerated or perishable items. Haven't checked into delivery pricing, but when was down with my foot my SIL would shop for Mom and I. Paid her $20 a trip once a week. The trips usually took almost an hour and a half. Had to rely on her to pickup the best and freshest stuff.

Since single and rarely have a full fridge, put a bunch of 1/2 gallon plastic milk cartons is my fridge and freezer to take up the unused space. Haven't actually tested it with my watt-o-meter but logic says the less air the faster and cheaper to recover from the door being opened letting all the cold air out if there is less empty space. Don't notice the fridge running as much any more, that could be because I fixed it so it doesn't sound like a fart when the compressor stops.

With the grey background here you gotta pick a darker green.:D

This one just says Green,

flipper35 10-11-2017 05:54 PM

OK OK guys. Here is the plan. We are stopping overnight in Denton Saturday night/Sunday Morning then stopping at the Chickasaw National Rec Area Sunday morning which would put us in OK City 3:00ish if you all want to just meet or grab a bite mid afternoon. I hate to screw up your meal schedule.

RKDinOKC 10-11-2017 06:02 PM

Okay by me. Just let me know where, when, etc.

flipper35 10-11-2017 06:25 PM

3ish. You guys pick a local good food place.

RKDinOKC 10-11-2017 06:48 PM

Oh maaaan, there is more than one of those.

My mind boggles when I think of the evolutionary path of internet connected sex toys

Outback Porsche 10-11-2017 07:38 PM

...Giggity...

RKDinOKC 10-11-2017 07:40 PM

Send the ransom money or I'll make it stop.
