Get off my lawn!
|
It was 24 when I got up, but up to 36 now. The wind is not insane today like yesterday.
The sky is not full of dust and ashes from the grass fires in the Texas panhandle, and western Oklahoma. When we were in Enid, my wife wanted to go check out the furniture store there. They opened in 1922, so 102 year old store, and a cool old building with wood floors that creaked, and there was a furniture in the basement and upstairs. And the third floor was closed off as just storage. Today she is looking at another furniture store near by. She is on a mission to get new furniture for the living room. As long as we can get rid of the uncomfortable couch we have now. It was a high end couch, but the cushions are dead, and the support springs are worn out.

Oh she has plans she has warned my about for a new garden in the front yard, where a tree was. So I will be digging up tree roots, and having lots of fun. We did have the stump ground down, but that does not get rid of all the roots. And I am betting it will be a 20 foot circle or so. Lots of digging up grass sod, and building a border of some material to keep the grass in the yard out of the new garden.

I have suggested we hire a professional to come lay out a dry stack wall for the flower bed wall around that area, and make it a raised flower bed, with nice new rich mix soil, and not the pure clay of the yard. It does not have to be very high, just enough to look nice and level it out and no be on the slope of the current yard.

Morning all. Sounds like a plan. Clay is the worst for flower beds.

All of our property is pure gumbo clay. Just get the organic tree roots or grass roots out, and you can make bricks. We have brought in a lot of "rich mix" composted soil, and added in a lot of our compost for the flower beds. Those flowerbeds have good soil after 28 years of living here.
The new flowerbed is where two different trees have been. Both trees were victims of ice storms and had to be removed. So that spot is not a large circle of where the last tree stump was ground out, and the wood particles of the grinding that were left. It will be a lot of work.

On Monday it was 88 degrees. Yesterday is was 42 and drizzle, sleet and snow and we accumulated 0.19 inches of rain. All the frozen stuff melted right away, except some trace in the valley of the roofs. The sleet was bouncing 8 to 10 inches off of the hood of the El Camino. Just weird to see.
My bathroom in the garage has a sign on the tank proclaiming the seat to remain up at all time unless in use. We have a lady come clean house every other Wednesday. She always cleans all the toilets and puts the seat down. The toilet and seat are the original low quality builder's quality units. The hinge brook this time when she lowered it. So I had the fun of going to the big box store and buying a toilet seat and installing it. I replaced the toilets in the house long ago with much better comfort height un-stoppable up able and new seats. The toilet in my garage bathroom does not get enough sitting action to have deserved an upgrade. Now it has a new slow close seat.

Cool.
I was forced into the assistant gardener role this weekend. The redbud tree we had planted a few months ago got a new tree ring. Where one tree was, will soon become a yet another garden. Another dry stacked stone wall and likely 20 feet around. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Yesterday was another 78 degree day. I was in the garage modifying the pond cleaning vacuuming system. We had too short of the flexible hose. So Mrs. Carrera bought a similar size 20 foot hose. It was a tiny bit smaller, and it did not fit the vacuum properly, so I had to rig up some adapters. It will be 65 today, and I suspect we will be out there sucking up the alga.

We are forecast to get to the high 60s. Today will be pond cleaning round two. We have a much longer flexible hose to make things better on the sucking end, and a long flexible drain tube. It will be so much fun.

Golly, even more "fun" than I thought. We got the "alga sucker Model-"1 in action. We need to shorten the 3 inch diameter flexible drain hose that is commonly use to drain pools so it has a straight shot too the drain. The 3 inch valve and pipes for the drain work great, and drain the tank in seconds. The pond is much better, but not done totally. We were done totally however. The sun was out, and the 70 degree heat was HOT with no breeze.
All in all, much better than the first try.

Nope, fish stay in the pond is the goal.
I was getting a little sunburned on my arms. If I go out in the sun, I wear a large "sun hat" and it has a flap in the back to cover my neck. Lots of very dark green alga came off the rocks on the bottom of the pond. The drain was on to a filter media to catch a lot of the muck. The rest went to the French drains and to the storm drains. The tadpoles will still have lots to eat once the toads and frogs return in a few weeks and start singing to the females.
