Party like a wild man.

So do you all get sloshed - drunk and and wear funny animal suits for first year parties?

So back to Monday. Hopefully David has recovered from the birthday party celebrations blowout.

We have been below normal temps all summer until September. This month it has been all above normal temps. I am ready for some fall weather and today is mid 90s again. Tomorrow we finally get some fall like weather with highs in the 70s. I am ready. I suspect we will be washing the boss's wife's car and the boss's El Camino.

Morning all. I have recovered up to a point. The sugar content is a killer.

We should get some thunderstorms tonight. Jacob had his mini-jeep in the parade on Saturday. He did good, but was so focused on keeping his distance he forgot to smile and wave. Dad had to sit right by the announcer instead of our normal spot so he could hear his "float" get announced. I think he is proud of the boy.

David, some days the sugar hangover isn't any better than a real one.

We flew a project this Saturday that is a typical nadir (looking straight down) mapping project. They also asked for various oblique angle shots of the different buildings and from different angles and directions. When we shoot oblique images the pilot just looks out the window and snaps away.

We have a Canon EOS 5DS R camera that shoots 8688x5792 pixel images (86 Megapixels) and we shoot it all in RAW mode, uncompressed and all the data the sensor has. It makes a 143 MB tif file. It is a huge image.

That much data is more than a good camera like a Hassleblad with an image 2.25x2.25 inches square can capture with film. It is nearing the image quality of a 4x5 frame of film, but not quite there.

When we last used film for the oblique images we shot with a Pentax 6x7cm on professional film. (2.25x2.75 inch) and if we scanned it at the best resolution with out 90 grand scanner it is almost as good as what the Canon does. It just blows me away how far digital has come. Canon is hinting at an even higher resolution camera.

We recently updated our mapping camera and it is a big step up. Faster and way higher resolution.

YEAH, fall arrived one day early. It was 62 degrees when I got up and was getting dressed. The high is supposed to be mid 70s. I LIKE IT.

I may have to go to the garage and find a project just to enjoy the nice weather.

It was 82* when I went home from work, about 8:00 we had some good thunderstorms and it went down to 50*. 55* when I came to work.

I was out in the detached garage working on a motorcycle when the power went off. I was glad I had a batter powered trouble light.

I had that happen once. Went into the garage to get something and the power went out. Took them 15 min to remember to come get me. There was no way I was going to attempt to move past 3 cars and all the other crap in total darkness.

I used to carry a little singe AAA mag lite as a flashlight with me at all times. A lifetime of working in darkrooms that are poorly lite taught me the value of having a light source at hand. Now I almost always have my cell phone with me. I love the flashlight on it.

I had a cell phone as well, but I don't like using it with grease, carb cleaner and DOT 3 brake fluid on my hands.

Burr. It was 50 degrees this morning. Loving it.

Still getting warm in the afternoons, but we are forecast to have 50 degrees each morning for a week or so.

Back to Photoshop fun. We flew a project that they had to have on a certain day, at a certain time. There were some cloud shadows on parts of the project. I "get" to go in and lighten those areas and then color correct them to look as normal as possible to blend color wise with the rest of the project that was full sun. It is just amazing what is possible with digital. It is not perfect, but dang it is a major improvement. The shadows are 1.5 to 2.0 F stops darker, so significantly darker to start with. And of course the "new and improved" Photoshop version 22.5.1 20210907.r.441 de74e1a x64 (what a version name) is mostly the same with new changes to keep it interesting.

Imagine doing that in the old days on film and an airbrush and masks.

Been there, done that.

One of the much used filters in Photoshop is "unsharp mask" and it is a great way to make an image look sharper. I am too lazy to type out the process of making a film unsharp mask, but I have had to do it in the past.

At my first job I worked with a lady that was in her late 70s, Mrs Adams. She was amazing at using the right bleaches to lighten areas of a print or remove a facial blemish, then add toner and color oils and turn a B&W print into a stunning color photo that looked like an really great oil painting.

We had a clientele of the rich folks that would come in to get a passport photo to go to Europe for a month. We would shoot it on 4x5 film, make the passport photos, then hand the negative to Mrs. Adams. She would make a 16x20 B&W print, and oil it and then frame it in a fancy frame and hang it in the front lobby. When the rich folks came back to get the vacation photos printed, they saw the photo on the wall and would pay big bucks for it. It was a money making thing.

It's raining cats and dogs here, and I love it. (It hasn't for some time- it's very welcome!)

I've avoided FB for the last year, but, went there tonight and want to share this story from the supporters of the Virginia State Police- from K. Overby.

(a little long, but good little story, and I know some Patrick county folk )

Only in Patrick County??? A Virginia State trooper pulled a car over on 58 about 2 miles east of Stuart . When the trooper asked the driver why he was speeding, the driver said he was a Magician and Juggler and was on his way to Stuart to do a show at Patrick County High School. He didn't want to be late.
The trooper told the driver he was fascinated by juggling and said if the driver would do a little juggling for him then he wouldn't give him a ticket. He told the trooper he had sent his equipment ahead and didn't have anything to juggle.
The trooper said he had some flares in the trunk and asked if he could juggle them. The juggler said he could, so the trooper got 5 flares, lit them and handed them to him.
While the man was juggling, a car pulled in behind the State Troopers car. A drunken good old boy from Patrick Springs got out, watched the performance, then went over to the Trooper's car, opened the rear door and got in. The trooper observed him and went over to the State car, opened the door asking the drunk what he thought he was doing.
The drunk replied, “You might as well take me to jail, cause there ain't no way I can pass that test.”

Are you still in the low country? It might be wise to go up to higher ground with 7 inches in 48 hours. We have in the past had 12 inches in 24 hours and there was flooding in low lying areas but just gully washers around here.

So what have ya been up to? Anything you can talk about?
