G, one of my dads closest friends was wearing a seatbelt when he was hit... He was killed on impact, just like the helmets, they don't always work.....

Are you saying we shouldn't really wear seatbelts while driving?
It's a question of acknowledging the risks and taking appropriate precautions, nothing more. How you estimate your chances is up to you of course, but statistics have already proven that helmets are very useful in preventing TBI's (traumatic brain injuries). Not falling would be the first thing to consider, wearing a helmet when you do, is the second... You can exaggerate all you want, but you won't convince me that the small effort of wearing a helmet outweighs the risks. ![]() PS, one of my best friends was the only one in his car NOT wearing a seatbelt, he was the only one that did not survive the crash, on the evening of his 21st birthday.... how's that for a dramatic example? ... Spend those 70 bucks on a helmet, you know you should.

Hey G, you should wear a helmet while taking the public trans... Please do this when they are packed and take lots of pix of the people staring and laughing at you.

I'm actually trying to push you to get a living will done. You guys are talking about seat belts while driving. I was trying to make another point about walking down the street and being hit. I used the bus analogy, 'cause I was hit by a car and survived just fine.

Shall we start a seperate thread on the subject, and see what the pelican braintrust thinks?? You can riducule all you want, but safety ain't no joke. Again, let's agree to disagree. ![]() (FWIW, I have climbed (indoor) without a helmet too (long time ago), and I have skied without a helmet for years... Would I do it again, no, I would not)

Honestly, if I were younger today, I probably would be wearing a helmet while skiing. While I'm no old goat, I've been skiing long enough that I am comfortable where I am and through the remainder of my skiing days, I will probably not wear a helmet.
I wear one at AX. I don't think there is a reason to, but it's required, so I do.

Dave, my dad isn't a lawyer, it's not as easy for me...
![]() As far as climbing indoors with a helmet? Totally pointless, when you are climbing on top rope, there is pretty much 0 chance of bashing your head. Oh and Dave, I shouldn't admit this, but there may or may not be pictures if me autocrossing without a helmet... In the wet.... Again, very little risk. |

While it's good to have a good legal document drawn up, you can go about it without a lawyer. Write it out, make sure to get a witness and a Notary - separate people, sign the doc along with the witness in front of the Notary. Actually, sign 2 or 3 copies and keep them separately.

Helmets do not make you death proof, but they reduce the chance of TBI significantly. Whether you think it is worth the 70 measly dollars or not, is up to you. If you are going to use these kind of arguments to try and negate the usefulness of a helmet, than there's really no use in discussing it.... I hope both of you change your minds, but you probably won't. So I'm hoping neither of you will ever actually need a helmet.

Back to the subject of seat belts and helmets.
In high school a good friend of mine was the only survivor out of 4 in the big crash because he was the only one un-cool enough to wear a seat belt. Back in those days seat belt usage was very low. It was just not cool to wear a seat belt. My friend's father was an Air Force pilot just like my dad. We both get the same lesson about seat belts. I buckle up sometimes just to move my car from one bay to the other in my garage. One of the ladies I used to work with never used a seat belt. Whenn we went somewhere in her car I would not allow her to drive until I dug the seat belt out of the passenger seat and had it on. I kept bugging her about how stupid it was to not wear a seat belt. When she got a newer car the seat belts were much easier to use. She actually had it on when a drunk driver plowed into her car. She said her first thought as she spun through the intersection and smacked a utility pole was "man I am glad I have my seat belt on, what would Glen have to say if I didn't." Her car was destroyed but she walked away with just a few glass cuts. Her husband thanked me for getting her to use her belts. Her family is now a believer in seat belts.

Helmets Shcmelmets...Don't go ANYWHERE there are bats, clubs, rackets, or any sport involving balls without a cup, and that especially includes birthday parties with a piņata. This has been a pubic service announcement.
Oh, and a fall from as little a 3 ft can inflict a terminal head injury.

Good evening guys.
The thread seems kinda slow tonight. Are you guys still awake? Gee, that sounds sorta like the first post on the thread.

Ya, I'm awake, studying right now...
Gave my notices today. I think my boss was completely dumbfounded... I'm curious to see what he tries to do to get me to stay over the next few weeks. I have no interest in staying though.... |
