the hunt, getting to find out of the way places and parks that you would otherwise not know about. Its free for entry level. Some are easy others are really tuff. You could be looking for something as small as your pinky tip to as large as a 10 gallon tub. Some are puzzles that you have to solve to get the coordinates.

And like most hobbies if you use a cheap GPS with 20 ft accuracy you will have a challenge. If you use a survey grade 1/16 inch accurate GPS you will spend many thousands of dollars, and cuss the cheap GPS users for inaccurate locations.

yep you will. Most have a hint online and most people who hide them are willing to email hints. You can tell if your finding ones that have been placed with a like gps you are spot on.

Stijn!!
The GPS from our airplane would be cool to play with for that. Except it needs a laptop to run it.

how accurate is it. My hand held can get to +/- 9 feet in an open area. My dad does not trust it at all. He is an old school campass user. Me I figure that if I can not find the truck within 18 feet I have no need to be in the woods.

I own one... We bought it to get coordinates when doing utility locates... I keep in the very bottom of my pack when I go out, just in case I get REALLY lost, or I need exact coordinates to give the SAR helo.

Sidney it helps if you set a point where the car is before heading into the woods. Just kidding.
two methods of getting un-lost. 1. take a deck of cards play solitare someone will come help play. 2. jellied gas in a tube set a tree on fire they will come put it out.

One of the surveyors we use to put down ground control targets said his GPS is accurate to the thickness of a piece of paper. That is after it has been sitting on a tripod for while and properly setup.

Is that with or without the use of a ref station Glen??
Or does it have a file with corrections already preloaded or sent to it via radio?? Or has stuff evolved so much since my hydro survey days that ordinary GPS is almost milimeter accurate?
