I think its weird how people call things "cursing" when it isn't even a curse!

Cursing is telling some one "May your toes turn into worms and fall off!", or "May your shoes always squeak in a way that sounds like a Justin Beiber recording."

Then people call things swearing that isn't. Swearing would be something like "By Mary".(I think bloody actually is a contraction for a swear, but I no longer remember the meaning).

Then there is vulgarity, which is what a lot of people use the above words to refer to. Vulgarities are typically German/Saxon words with Norman counterparts that mean the same thing. It wasn't befitting of a noble of the new ruling class(Norman conquerors) to use the words of the old ones(Saxon). So its ok to say crap(norman), refering to excrement, but its vulgar to use 5hit(Germanic). A German word for thrusting is vulgar, but the Norman word screw isn't. So you can say that you screwed something up, but its improper to use the Germanic of F'ing something up even though they both mean the same thing.

Then there is profanity, which again, I hear misused to refer to vulgarity, although depending on some words, you can have things that are both profanity and vulgarity. Profanity is using things that people may consider sacred in a common usage. A profanity that makes me want to comment when some one around me says it, is when people who are used to using the word hell as a common adjective will say "cold as hell" without realizing how stupid they just sounded.... I soooo wannt comment "Musta not been that cold...."

annnnd, I'm not used to being up when people are saying g'night in this thread, I guess I'm stuck on the old time and not in bed yet...

They don't say its as cold as the inner circle of Dante's Inferno. They probably never even heard of it. When ever I hear some one say cold as hell, they tend to be pretty ignorant, with few words over four or five letters in their vocabulary. Most adjectives in their conversations consist of four and three letters and replace any more accurate expressions that would be used in their place. Cold as "screw" is also used in a similar fashion.

Its given out in the Bible that satan is thrown into a lake of fire, which doesn't seem to match Dante's account, Dante's was probably an allegory showing satan as powerless, absolute zero has no energy.

So when some one blurts out "its cold as hell in here", from context of their other speach, I doubt they realize what they just said. The few times that there is a break in their speaking following the phrase, that gives me a chance to comment, I find they didn't realize what they just said. Their perception of hell(if at all) wasn't one of freezing cold.

Cold as Hell.

If you trace the word hell it's origin. The Biblical Hebrew vernacular instead of Byzantine interpretation, then Hell is the name of the city dump outside of Jerusalem. In those days if you were wealthy you could afford to be buried in tombs and grave yards. If less fortunate your body would be thrown in the city dump, ie., Hell.

The piles of rotting and rotten bodies in the dump were a breeding ground for disease which was carried into the city by rats and other vermin. To try to keep the disease at bay the bodies were burned. There were enough indigent dead that the dump burned day and night or what seemed like forever. Hence the warning, "You will burn in Hell, if you don't change your ways." Which literally meant that if you didn't change to be more successful you would become indigent and be thrown in the dump instead of being able to afford a nice tomb. Hell is literally where they threw out the dead and set them on fire.

Next, the Hell reference as a degree of coldness. Have you ever gotten really cold? Almost frostbite cold. Guess, what. Instead of feeling just cold or going numb, it BURNS. Especially when trying get circulation going to warm back up. It burns like, well like the piles of bodies on fire in the city dump, or to use the vernacular, it burns like Hell.

So if it is cold enough that exposure would stop the circulation in your extremities so you could get frostbite where your extremity would shrivel up and turn black like it had been burnt, then it is as cold as hell.

In the summer I only wear shoes at work. If I have to go somewhere I carry my shoes and put them on when I get out of the car. I hate shoes

Wow Richard... Kind of a genius there buddy. I'm cold as hell often and I wouldn't say I'm ignorant. I was ignorant to the fact that there are people walking around with enough time to judge others based on that. Vulgarity, cursing, whatever... That I'm calling someone a f#%*ing idiot is what's really important.
