The only natural pink lake on the planet and it is supposed to be safe to swim in.

There are a lot of pink lakes in Oz. Usually created by a poisonous red algae and thus are seasonal. This one they reckon, is permanently red/pink. My parents used to live nearby on the mainland. Good fishing in those islands (and all along that coast) - King George Whiting, Salmon, Leather Jackets.....Shark

Is it pink due to salinity? I know sea salt farms or whatever you call them will turn pretty colors as the water evaporates in the ponds.

I've always understood it to be an algae that gives the salt the colour. I could easily be wrong though.

Now that you mention it, that is right. The show I watched said that different bugs/algae live in different salinities and make different colors. But these bugs were harmless as I recall.

There are other bugs that live in stagnant water and are pink but they make H2S which will kill you if you come into contact with it (absorbed through skin).

Argh!!!!!! I don't think there are words in the human language for how irritating 20+ chigger bits are... I seriously think amputating my legs at the knees would be less uncomfortable right now!!!

Hard to believe a critter that is less than 1/150th of an inch in size can be that damned annoying!
