Oh man, getting my one network cable fixed was expensive. It had a tiny hole in the cable where the tree fell thru the roof the other winter.
Called 3 geeks and told them I need a new wire pulled. The said they could fixit. Sent a guy out that tested the wire and put new ends on it. Then when that didn't fix it said they don't pull wires any more! Was a bit upset cause I told them that's what I needed and they charged me $150 dollars and wasn't able to do what I initially asked for. They gave me the name of a company "they used to pull wire." That company called four times in 3 days and kept asking me what I needed done. Told them I needed a new wire pulled where and exiting older wire was having speed problems. Even said all it would take was taping the new wire end to the old one and pulling it thru the 50 ft run and put the ends on it. After the three days of no body coming out I call another company from a web site like Angie's list. It came up towards the front on google. The guy immediately schedule an appointment for the next day. He came out and checked the wire like the 3 geeks guy and said it needed a new wire pulled like I had originally said. Said he would have to come back to pull it and charged $75. Came back the next day and pulled the new wire. Just taped it to the old one and pulled it thru. Put new ends on it, plugged it and a bam gigabit! Total time 15 minutes. Charged me another $75 for pulling the wire. Checked over the old wire and did find the tiny hole in the same location as were the tree limb had fallen thru the roof. Total bill was $300 for $10 worth of connectors and wire and a very easy and quick 15 minute job of pulling the wire thru were a wire already existed. The whole job was exactly what I originally asked for and if they had just done what I originally asked would have only been one trip and $75. Arrgh. It is nice to have the wire for my servers back up to speed.

When I had my burglar alarm system installed and the two video cameras set up they had to pull new wire up the wall in my office and all the way to the other end of the garage and another one to the front door. I told the installer that "while you are in there" pull a third wire up the wall" and right now it just goes up the wall to a 100 foot or more of a large spool of Cat5. I can always put a switch up there and have new Cat5 anywhere. The cameras both have a power over ethernet box on the individual cables. Wireless has it uses but cable still works better for some things.
The installers had a real fight to get the wire up the wall. When I set up my office with the desk against the east wall I wanted the coax cable on that wall. The cable company just wanted to drill a hole in the bricks and go down the wall outside. Screw that. I had the fun of laying on my belly in the attic on the rafters with my face in the insulation fishing a cable up the wall. The installers used my same location to pull the three other wires and it is a pretty tight location now. I think I am set now. Good morning all.

Yep, I got some old coax and phone lines tacked to the brick around my house I ought to pull off. Cox installers are really lazy. Remember back in the day when I ran cables for stereo installs and such i got quite a few jobs snaking various cables down walls for people to keep from having cables tacked to the outside of their houses. Learn to do it from my Dad doing electrical jobs. Even had a special drill with an Ell on the end to make it easier to drill the wall caps. It's really hit and miss running into cross bracing between studs though.

Off to the doc for my annual physical. I don't expect anything new from the last one. A few more aches in the morning but pretty good overall, I think.

Saw an internet thing today were a 24 yo newer employee at Google in San Fransisco is living in a Ford panel truck. Says he is saving 90% of his after tax income. Says just rent was $2000 per/mo and his savings has already paid for the truck and he should have is $22K student loan paid off within 6 months.
He is eating at Google company cafeteria and showers in the Google company gym. All the truck has in it is a dresser, wardrobe, and bed. Didn't say where/how he did his laundry.

I think a lot of people are looking at the way the cost of housing is going up and saying why? Look at the tiny house movement, lots of people saying I don't need a big house just fill up with junk, and I can be happy living on a small salary and low expenses. That's our plan in a few years. Can't live in a tiny house with kids, but once they are gone...

Housing in the midwest is still fairly reasonable. For what an unimproved acre plot cost where we lived in California would buy a fairly large house on acreage here. For example:
4070 Braelan Oaks Ln, Hazel Green, WI 53811 | Zillow 5010 Patriot St, Hazel Green, WI 53811 | Zillow Or, for the cost of a high end car: 725 W Barber Ave, Livingston, WI 53554 | Zillow

I don't understand the tiny house thing. For what they are spending you could get a motor home the same size. And it would be a LOT more mobile if needed.
Friend of mine's sister, the one with the golden retrievers, lived at her parents house in a motor home parked on the back of the lot for a couple of years. I thought that was kinda nuts because she had a perfectly good room with attached bath in the house. I visited some Computer tech employees in the silicon valley in 1993. It was very common for 3 couples to be living in 900 sqft 3 bedroom home to share the cost of living. The friend I was visiting and staying with was making the really big bucks living in a 1 bedroom apt 1 mile from his Apple office for $2K per mo. He also had a $1K per month T1 internet connection.

I don't need a huge house, but could never go back to something the size of our first apartment.
I will say that the county you live in makes a huge difference in cost. We looked at a house half the acreage and sq/ft of what we have now but it was 3 miles away across the county line. Taxes were 1.66 times higher than our current house. I can't see that kind of tax hike to live in a less than desirable town in a county with no industry.

We're currently living in a 500 sq ft apartment while our condo is on the market. This apartment is the smallest place we've lived in since we were married. Our SoCal house is 1600 sq ft, which is the smallest single-family home we've owned since our very first house.

That was the size of our house in SoCal as well. We were out in the country until the city expanded out to us.

Our hose is way bigger than we need but the spare bedroom is handy for the occasional guest. I could easily be happy in a smaller house but ain't no way no how under any circumstances I give up my oversize 3 car garage unless it is for a 4 car garage.
When I am no longer able to drive myself I will get by with just one automatic self driving for me and one for the wife.

Phew.
Two women came in wanting to talk to the HR director. Yea, well, we are not that big. They both were wearing a LOT of perfume. They have been gone for a while and the place still stinks.

I told Thuy I was fine with 600sqft or less and then I'm going to build myself a nice shop on the place too.
Al the tiny houses on wheels don't appeal to me. They aren't very good at being RVs or houses. I'm going to build ours out of shipping containers. Then we will buy a small RV to travel in. |
