Had a pair of 916's for a long time. Some advice...

If it doesn't already have raised bars, find a set made by Heli, or the equivalent. Stick to roads where you can keep the speeds up. Above 70 or 80, the wind pressure on your upper body will help a lot. Stay away from city stop-and-go. If you ride this on the roads it was intended for, your comfort will increase considerably. Find a fast, flowing two lane out in the sticks. You'll find an rpm range with these things, that they like. On a 916, it was north of 5k. On a 748, it might be a little different.

Where do you ride around Seattle? Are there good roads close by? I don't know Seattle as well as I used to (which wasn't that well) but seems it has sprawled enough that it must be a hike to reach open road.

Dayum, how did I miss this? You guys have been talking about this for days and this is the first I've seen of it. Sweet. Very, very sweet. We'll have to get out and ride sometime.

John - yes, it is a "hike", even for me, living north of Seattle up here in Lynnwood. It takes me a good half hour to 45 minutes just to escape the sprawl and get out to the good riding/driving roads. Once there, however, the trip is worth it. We are blessed with some of the best roads imaginable, winding their way through our various river valleys and up into the foothills of the Cascades. Once over the Cascades (given enough time for such a trip), Eastern Washington is a veritable motoring playground. Vast stretches of lonely, winding two lane highways.

Years later I still lust after a 748. I hate you.

I'm staying with the 900 but have noticed that this bike has been for sale here for quite a while.

...A veritable motoring playground spoiled only by the constant presence of corrupt Washington state Highway Patrol officers extorting vast amounts of money from passing motorists for no reason whatsoever, other than to line their pockets.

I've driven in many third world countries that have more equitable law enforcement than Washington State....

Agreed. Washington now ranks as the sixth worse state in which to drive in the latest American Motorist Association's ratings. They rank states based upon a number of factors, including traffic densities, road maintenance, and traffic enforcement. They make note that Washington ranks so poorly due almost entirely to our unjust and un-Constitutional, purely revenue-based traffic enforcement practices. Our roads are well maintained and outside of the Puget Sound area, traffic is never a concern.

That said, if one stays off of the major highways, there are plenty of places to play. They are looking for a high volume of petty tickets that no one will bother to fight. Their greed demands a certain traffic volume to make it worth their while to set up their speed traps or patrol with their airplanes. Avoiding these roads, one typically only finds the odd county deputy driving around, maybe with his RADAR on, maybe not. Most just leave it on, making it pretty darn easy to know when they are about. And, since they are driving, they can't use LASER, so it makes it even easier. Our State Patrol likes their instant on RADAR, but they typically can't be bothered with the really lonely secondary roads.
