That Mahindra diesel truck
The series of delays has pushed back the introduction of truck in the US. Do you guys think this truck is a stillborn? There were claims of fuel mileage of 30 mpg and higher. I think 30 mpg would be low considering the promised common rail injection, turbocharged, small-displacement diesel.
I want to buy a smaller truck to fill the gap between a car and 3/4 ton truck. The small Toyota trucks are overpriced. Ford Ranger pricing seems reasonable with its higher depreciation rate, and I don't think the Ranger gives up much with regards to durability and reliability. The other option is waiting for this Mahindra truck to arrive. On the other hand, the company has no track record for trucks, and I'm leery of buying the first models. BTW, I think the truck is ugly as ass, but I'm not buying for looks. ![]() Mahindra? |

When I first read about it I was interested. If you already have the 3/4 ton, I'd wait. Even if it's not them, someone will bring a small diesel to market that's worth buying...I hope.

I think it's going to be a stillborn project. I've been watching them to replace my f150 and crx as a daily driver and tow rig, but the more they drag their feet the less I'm interested, especially now that mahindra USA has sued Mahindra trucks.

Damn! That's fugly.
It would be nice if they came out with an F150, Dodge or Chevy 1500 with a diesel. Although I heard or read one was coming out with one at some point. Anybody know about it? Last edited by A930Rocket; 07-21-2010 at 05:51 AM.. |

Mahindra has been building trucks and tractors since the late 1940's. India is full of Mahindras. I have a Mahindra 4x4 diesel tractor that is better than anything I have ever used (JD, Ford, NewHolland, M-F).
So in short Mahindra is not a fly by night company.

I want the Fcking HILUX diesel! GRRRRR!
So many car companies make cool diesels but b/c the majority of America is piss ignorant and doesn't like diesels.... They don't sell them here... People were always shocked when we told them that moms Jetta wagon was a diesel. It was very smooth and had torque.... My god that car had torque... |

Indian made goods are only a slight improvement over China and only in certain regard. Indian business is very similar to Chinese business in that maximum profit dictates decisions. Quality and customer service are things that are foreign to that part of the world. Is this the case 100% of the time? Of course not. I have seen first hand many of the better things made in India and can say that unless there is a substantial increase from that level of quality, the product will be marginal at best. A vast increase in quality still wouldn't put an India product on Dodge level for example. I think I would buy a stripped down 6.7 Dodge Ram over any Mahindra. Maybe even consider a stripper Chevy Duramax. Even if more expensive, at least you're getting something where the term "heavy duty" means something. I'd like to see a cross section of the components on the Mahindra before passing any serious judgment.

The merits of the big diesels are not being challenged, but rather folks are looking for a product that will fill a void in the market - a small fuel efficient light duty truck.

They already make it... The Toyota Hilux... Or the new VW diesel pickup. Why they don't sell them here is beyond me...

I don't see this Mahindra thing coming here either...
If more Americans were hollering for diesels.... They would bring them... But so many americans think diesels are loud, dirty, and underpowered. Thank you GM circa 1980's...... |

Diesel fuel is so expensive here relative to gasoline, unlike the rest of the world, that you won't see them here in the near future.

I've talked to some people here at work and they have the same mentality. That the gas is cheaper therefore it's cheaper to run without actually running the numbers.

I filled up my truck yesterday with 23 gallons of diesel at $2.89/gal. This was at a truck stop on my way home from picking the teuck up. I think that's the same price as 89 octane at a station closer to my house.
Tim's math looks good. One more thought - you know how people are gaga over E85, especially around here? It's usually cheaper than 89 octane, but then they lose 20-30% of the mileage! I laugh when I drive by and see the poor fools pumping it. |

This thing might have DOT or EPA fine print keeping it out. Crash tests, particulates - who knows? Saw a dock full of Eastern European SUVs in the 1990s with the same issues.
Yes, many things in India (and Mahindra) are low tech and robust. Not sure this thing meets modern US standards. |

I was just at Mahindra in Mumbai a couple of weeks ago actually. They are one of the largest auto companies in India, making cars, SUV's, and trucks. I didn't see one of those pickups. They had a lot of what looked like the old Jeep though. They had traditional short body, and pickup version as well. Didn't look like a bad truck. Much better that the one above. They are supposed to have pretty good diesel technology. From the sound of it, they are going to make a push to global markets, including the US. The SUV is supposed to be pretty durable.
