I use the heck out of the roof rack on both of my Jeeps. The old beater jeep has a thule rack system on it ( there when I got it), and I haul ladders, wood, pipes, you name it. We also use the factory rack on our other jeep for long distance road trips. We use one of those big yakima containers, and we can fit a ton of stuff in it and leave us some room in the vehicle to move around.
I don't care if it looks dorky, suv's in general are dorky anyhow, just large crap haulers to me

I'm not qualified to judge what is and isn't dorky, but I've always admired the rack under this green turtleneck:

I dont have much time for roof racks other than absolute necessity.

It seems they are the new trend in what ever style of car these are...

My protege 5 has them from the factory. I haven't had the need to use them but there they are.

I love my roof rack on my 4Runner, it gets lots of use. Car top carrier, boards, pipes, canoe, etc. The hitch does too. When I pick up another dirt bike one day I'll get a hitch hauler for it that can still pull a small camping trailer behind it. It'll be a nice setup...

And no, I don't expect you to put the roto-tiller on the roof rack.
Something like this, if your hitch is heavy duty enough is better than trying to stick stuff on the roof (safer and better fuel economy).

My X-Terra would look dorky without the roof rack.

I've kept a Yakima rack on the wife's Corolla for years. It's a pain to take off, store, then remount everytime I want to hit the river. And I'm not about to tie a 17' kayak to the roof of a car without a rack- I did that enough with my squirt boat before I was old enough to consider using a rack.

Why do you care what "THEY" think? That stuff is for young insecure people. "THEY" know nothing. There are important issues to worry about. This is certainly not one of them.

Most of the factory racks have a sticker warning not to load more than about 15 pounds on them. From a style standpoint... I think some vehicles do look better with a roof rack, functional or not.

Roof racks would make more sense on sedans that have less trunk area. Any thoughts?
Don't you and your wife have more important topics to discuss, e.g. dorky colors, tire tread patterns, driver haircuts, preset radio stations, floor mat patterns, etc.? If this debate took place on an overly long, boring trip through Kansas, it's understandable. Otherwise, both might want to get a life or discuss your in-laws.

What's a cool wagon?

It was a long drive through southern Missouri...there's not much to see. It was just a light-hearted conversation, like this thread was supposed to be.
