Do people swap other engines into E28s? Like, get a 528, go through the loose bits, and stuff in a ________? I like the sleeper understated look, it was so in 198X and would be 10X more now.

There are some swaps out there but far less common than swaps into e30s. It is a big engine bay so you can put a big V8 in there if you have the fabrication skills. There was a build thread I was looking at the other day with a M62 engine dropped in along with a 6 speed transmission from a e39 540 sport. Very impressive sleeper.

So if you wanted to do a swap odds are you can find someone who has done it, but they are far from plug and play. I would love to have an S52 in mine down the road, but for now that is more of a pipe dream as the 911 gets all the go fast money.

My departed but missed e34 M5. They were built so well. 76K miles and looked newer than most other cars at 20K miles.

Love these cars. If anyone is interested in a very nice US e28 M5 I can put you in contact with my friend who has one to sell. Currently in storage for the winter but it'll be out soon.

I don't think I 'get it'...

I like sports cars, because they're sporty. Responsive, visceral, noisy, lightweight.

I like commuter cars, because they're commuter cars. Comfortable, boring, quiet, with space to haul things/people.

I had an E28 535i for a year. It seemed no faster than my Camry V6. Yet needed as much crap fixed on it-probably more-than a neglected 911 (and if I had fixed it I would have had $4k into a $2k car with 210,000 miles.)

Perhaps I 'get it' to some extent with an E30 M3 or Z3M coupe or something that is practical-ish yet very sporty and well-balanced. But a 5-series? A big lunking E39 or E60?! I think I would just steal the E28 or E34 M5 motor to put into an E30 Sedan/M3...or better yet just go onto an S54 or S50B32...and by that time I would have enough invested in the project to just build a hot rod 911...

I do admit they look good. The E34 posted above is a gorgeous, solid machine.

But I don't get the reason for turning big lunks into muscle cars, sports sedans or...anything really, besides big lunks to haul your junk to the mountains.

Flame suit zipped ;-)

Big lunk?
The 1985 e28 euro M5s had ~290hp and weighed ~3200 lbs (11 lbs/hp)
The 1985 911 Carrera euro had ~230hp and weighed ~2800 lbs (12 lbs/hp)

Hell, a new base 997 weighs about the same as a e28 M5

I can see some questioning about the validity of owning a 5 series. It's funny since they guy that is my salesmen for BMW and owned a 540 finally got rid of it after the water pump replacement just set him back $700. He bought an Accord. Owning a BMW does come at a price. As far as the 5 series size, it fits my needs to a T. The e39 versions had really poor leg room, even for kids. The 3 series is also devoid of any rear leg room. The 7 series is just too big period. I like most of the new Audi's also, but a quick check of OTB and I don't find much good about anything from that make.

89911. I disagree, I think the e39 has plenty if rear legroom. I know my friends greatly prefer it to my old e34 for long trips.

I have a 89 Carrera. Wonderful fun driver's car. My kids no longer fit in the rear seat.

And a 1988 VW Vanagon. Great camper and people hauler. Not the funnest driver's car. Everytime I take a curve, camping gear flies around the cabin.

I could use something in between. Obviously, it can't be <20 y/o. JTWII (Just The Way It Is).

Yes it would do - but I first need 1+ year of researching, obsessing, drooling, collecting books, reading websites, changing my mind, changing it back, debating with myself, fighting w/ my wife, apologizing to the 911, getting mocked and abused here ("Should I Buy A Miata Or A M-5?" "How About This Pink M5?" "M5 Or Viagra?") - you know, the usual.

I liked my E28. It was relatively light for a sedan, kind of simple compared to newer cars: louder, rawer.

I would probably buy another, happily, but at this point they have all been driven into the ground. I feel the way McLovin does about E28s. An E28 M5 is a sweet car, but by the time I got a nice one, I'd wish I just got a 911SC for the weekend and a 10-year-old Corolla to putt to work...Most Beemers are just too much of a compromise for me.....either as sports cars or as haulers/commuters

HOWEVER, someday I wouldn't mind putting an E28 M5 motor into a track car, maybe a well-setup 944...
