I see what you mean re the pockets - very impressive!
I think I'd have to build a new wall tho - it is a 2x4 wall now. I've heard good things about the Marvin Integrity line before, will check that out. |

Seems like a perfect application for a wood slider,(either cladded or not) protected from the elements you are guaranteed to have long service. A few years ago we built a home on a point of land on the ocean, we installed the architect spec'd wood/metal cladded windows. This place was HIGHLY exposed to wind, rain, and sun. Over about ten years many of the windows rotted under the cladding because the cladding would let in some moisture that couldn't get out. Modern, quality sliders have come a long way and seal very well. That being said, two large slabs of glass (slider or french) will be less heat efficient than a conventional wall and single door (in swing). From your picture, the roof overhang doesn't allow much light through that slider anyhow. Cheers

Thanks - the area is pretty well shaded and has a roof over it and then a deck to keep out rain.
The existing door is about 80" high and 70" long. That short interior wall is only about 28" wide, so I don't see any way to use an in-swing door there(?) An outswing French door could work I guess, but there is a step right outside, so I'd have to deal with that to meet code. If anybody has other ideas, please let me know. I'm thinking that a replacement sliding glass door is the way to go. |

anyone have thoughts about Marvin Integrity sliders?
it is cheaper than a wood one, but allows us to avoid vinyl (not allowed in the house) |

Integrity is a damn good product. Just watch for sizing, they do not make custom.

You can install any door, BUT the most important thing is "best practices" for the install.
I installed an Andersen Frenchwood gliding door and used the following for the install... Preformed PVC sill pan DuPont Flex Wrap DuPont Straight Wrap Make darn sure it is PLUMB and LEVEL! Double check it! Caulking and tar paper flashing just is not enough for doors that are directly exposed to the elements. The door seals like a vault and is beautiful to look at as well.

Good planning.
AL is a neat material for certain applications. Unfortunately, it conducts heat well, so in the winter the inner frame tries to be the same cold temperature(and collect moisture) as the outer frame. |

I replaced an aluminum door (in worse shape than yours) with a Pella.
A really nice touch is venetian blinds in between the two glass layers. Love it. It is vinyl, not 'glass so that won't work in your situation, but just upgrading that stupid door with something modern made the whole room so much nicer.
