I actually don't like Mustangs. Though I've always been a FORD guy- the only two American cars I've ever owned have both been Fords, a '66 F100 and a '97 Ford Aerostar, which I still own.
-Nothing makes me happier than watching a Mustang outrun some silly gm product. My favorite are the Buick Grand Nationals from the year 1987; My 928 killed one DEAD one night in Orlando [I beat the HELL out of that guy! At the next light, he told me that there was nothing wrong with his car], and SOHC Mustangs these days can typically smoke the silly hair-dried pushrod V6- These are basically cheap 928's. None of the effort, just cubic inches in a small chassis. I doubt I will ever own one, since they don't excite me at all, but they are cheap thrills nonetheless- N! |

My buddy and I restored a 1968 Shelby GT500KR back in the late 70's-early 80's and it was fast with the 428 CobraJet engine! It was fast and powerful, but it was a completely different experience than driving my 911. I love both cars... for different reasons.

You ain't kiddin!! The first drive I took in it, after I got it home, left a load of bricks on the seat. It went like a raped ape (light with a well worked 289), but braking and steering were almost non-existent. Fear of Gawd is right. A complete steering, suspension with Koni's, and brake re-do actually made it kind of fun to toss around, without seeing my life pass before my eyes.

My 65 had drums. When it rained in LA, the road camber meant water pooled by the curb, so the right side drums were soaked while the left were fairly dry. An emergency stop would then spin the car. I learned to drag my brakes after deep puddles. Seemed perfectly normal at the time.

I miss mine, but I miss my '66 GT Fairlane more!
![]() ( NOT MINE) Dad had a '68 F250 that used to trailer race cars. The 390 blew. It ended up with a 428 Cobra Jet engine in it. He gave the truck to my Nephew, but with a 390. The '28 is now in his '57 ford fairlane My toploader trans from my Fairlane is in his '40 Coupe

They used to build the early Mustangs when I was a kid down at the nearby Rouge Plant. I built several plastic models of them, and bought my first car in 1979, a 1966 notch back Mustang. I had the engine rebuilt, redid the body work myself, and had it painted. It was nice to look at as the sun went down, the dark blue paint and chrome seemed to have a magnetism.
I liked the car, but driving pleasure goes to rear engined cars of any HP.

Now, that is the one I would want. Wow, what a car. Did you or the friend hold onto it?

My dad was a mustang guy, but unfortunately while I was growing up he had a '76 Mustang II (dark days indeed). It was a pale yellow color just like this, but in a hatchback rather than the "landau" top shown:

Bullitt interior shot done by an IMBOC club member with photo skills...you can change dash light colors. I set mine to green, reminding me of the early 912 I had.

![]() For all the die-hards who dislike please consider what you get to start: stainless steel exhaust with nice tone 18 x 8.5" aluminum wheels 6 spd, LSD aluminum bonnet aluminum engine with 412 hp airbags/abs traction/stability control (on or off ability) AC/Cruise starting for under $30K, NEW w/warranty sure, it has a plastic interior but the Mustang has a very solid, comfortable ride.

What I absolutely LOVE about my Bullitt Mustang? That I can park it behind my favorite pool hall, grab my cue case, hit the alarm fob button & walk away without looking back. Because...it's "just" a Mustang...easily replaced with insurance if bad stuff happens. If I want to ride it hard & park it filthy in the garage until I'm damned good and ready to clean it up? Not one pang of guilt about that.
"Just" a Mustang has many good sides that surpass the downside of it being a pretty common car. Do I "love" it? Does it "thrill" me? Hell no! And at this stage of my life, that's a good thing.

![]() My best bud Les had a silver blue '69 Mach 1 his old man bought him just before senior year. We worked in a local grocery store and went everywhere in that thing after hitting the clock. Fun times.
