I don't recall if this has been posted in this thread (likely has), but I am fascinated with this little jewel. I recall in another thread (maybe this one) from a user with an engineering background that it was such a poor decision for Porsche to go with an engine of this layout due to the dynamic forces at play. Maybe they did it to prove they could?

It vibrated the first car apart- the reports I heard were that hydraulic lines, possibly for a front to rear interconnected suspension were resonating and causing all sorts of problems. They lost 6 months remaking the crankshaft to help the vibrations. It's a poor design from a purely engine standpoint but one must remember it is also part of the chassis so being short and a 90 degree angle gave best stiffness.
