"Stealing Speed" by Mat Oxley is the story behind the development of motorcycle racing. Who knew there was so much development done in Nazi Germany? I did not.

I just finished The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. I've enjoyed the series as well as a couple of his other books. He has become pretty prolific in the epic fantasy genre.

Blind Man's Bluff. About submarine intelligence gathering during the Cold War. Real stories about the programs and the men in the boats. Very good.

If you like all things British MI5, try 'Real Tigers" Mick Herron.
It was recommended to me by an old acquaintance of mine who was an intel officer in the Navy. It is the third book in a series but it stands alone and is very funny and witty.

Attention 'Boys in the Boat' fans...PBS, in our area, is presenting a docu-drama tomorrow night (9 EDST) based on the book.

Anne Proulx, "Barkskins" a novel on the American logging industry. She wrote Brokeback Mountain.....an attempt at a green revolution in logging. Interesting slant and well written. She is a Pulitzer Prize winner. Slowish read but entertaining with great character development. People die and become rich and lose everything. 5 Stars!

Anyone read Sam Posey's "Where the writer meets the road"? I always enjoyed his articles and pre-race blurbs when F1 was good and on Speedvision. I cant find it anywhere and amazon cancelled my order after being unable to locate a copy. Now they want $915 for it??

The Last Days of Night, by Graham Moore.
Only his 2nd novel, but I like his style. Revolves around the 1880's in NYC and the real-life battle between Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, Nicholas Tesla, and a host of others for the rights to electrify the city. Bill K PS: Sam Posey fans might enjoy his model train book - about the lay-out he (and his son) built in their Connecticut farmhouse.

Into the Black: The Extraordinary Untold Story of the First Flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia and the Astronauts Who Flew Her - by Rowland White and Richard Truly
Careful there are several books named thusly ;-) This one is about the birth of the space shuttle, test pilots, technical issues. It's fascinating, and scary to think how close they came to disaster (other than the real disasters that did happen). Very interesting ! |

If you like fantasy there are few books as good as the "A Song of ice and fire" series by George RR Martin.

Asking once again - I've run out of of ideas.....Upcoming knee surgery, 15 day cruise and winter require I stock up on books.
In the past 2 years since posting on this tread, I've tried to become more well-rounded by reading: 4 books on Mt Everest, 3 books on Mt. St Helens, 2 on General Patton, South Africa history, 4 books on our recent Presidential Election (including one from the LOSER), Pres Regan, and all new from my 3 Fav authors: John Grisham, Carl Hiaasen, and Lee Childs.... Got bogged down with Mike Connelly, Dan Brown and John Sanford. What's out there?

Read my book! It's a page-turner. There's even a '73 911S in it.
