20 yrs ago in the Virginia lottery a group of speculators bought just about every combination ($7.5 mil if I remember right, when the payout got to be maybe $40 mil. They sent people around with $10,000 cashiers checks and a box of prefilled slips to run through. Imagine the organization to make that all happen. Some numbers weren't grabbed because some outlets had other customers who wanted to buy tickets - imagine that!
The tough part was - now that they had the winning ticket in a poorly secured lock up, the top dogs had to hire security and find the ticket themselves. It took weeks, with the chance that the ticket wasn't purchased afterall. Here's a bit about it: Group Invests $5 Million To Hedge Bets in Lottery - New York Times Lottery Investors Unsure If Jackpot Was Virginia's - NYTimes.com The connection is assumed - but not confirmed.

Absolutey! You'd get truckloads of mail from every scammer and sob story, asking for money for an operation, to fulfill someone's dying wish, buy houses for relatives, pay for weddings, college for everyone you know. You'd hear from everyone who needs investors for this invention or that drug. You could blow through that money in less than a year if you didn't insulate yourself from all that would be coming at you. I just never understood the mindset of the winners who want to show it off. It's asking for huge problems. No one needs to know anything about my finances. No one.

first things first. if u do win the lottery, do not claim it in person. that's why u hear all these sob stories.
talk with your financial advisor (or hire a better one cause yer rich now!) and attorney (get a really good one, you're rich now!) and setup a trust fund. send the money to the trust fund. and if u do win, please feel free to put me on the beneficiary list. i'll be more than happy with 1%

I know it's pissing away $5, but for five minutes, I get to dream of what if... Hell, I might even stay in CA if I won, I'd buy a house on Rincon Point in Santa Barbara county.

yea but with 350 million, u should buy up all the property on nevada state line, then blow california into the ocean, and have instant monopoly on the new pacific coastline beachfront property.
wasn't that a bond movie plot? |

i walked right into an empty store and bought 2 tickets like i always do. no lines here
if i win, i am going to get in touch with Motorhead and ask if I can be in the band in exchange for 5 million to each Lemmy, Phil and Mickey if they say no, as punishment, i will buy every ticket on their next tour so i am the only one in the audience for the entire tour

Yesterday, I paid $4.96 for a gallon of gas - spending a buck on a chance at $600m didn't seem so bad after that.
So, after I win I need a place where I can buy enough property to build a private 2-mile race track with enough of a buffer zone that the neighbors can't complain about the noise. A state with low pop density, mild climate, and (for ease of construction) fairly flat terrain. Ideas?

a tropical island with a 2 mile diameter with the track around the outer edge and a private airport in the middle for your friends to come visit and one of those subs like on LOST

I've been living so long on so little, if I ever won millions, I could live much better than I do now on just the interest. I'd buy a big piece of land, build a big shop and a small house. surround it with a 10ft fence to keep everyone out. I'd donate money to everyone that has helped me in the past... which means I keep it all for myself. oh.. I do need a pair of new shoes
