You can't rate PF by singles.
Need to consider the album as a whole concept. For me it's a toss up between Meddle and Animals. Dark Side is brilliant but has some distinct POP tones to it. All of The Wall with the exception of what got AirPlay was also brilliant. |

I'd have to say, in order:
Wish You Were Here Meddle Dark Side Of The Moon Animals The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn Ummagumma All great stuff. I saw them live in 1976 on the Wish You Were Here tour at Roosevelt Stadium in NJ. I was psychedelically altered at the time, and it was absolutely amazing. Had I not been, it still would have been great. And they did Echoes, which to see live is unreal, complete with CO2 fog rising on the stage. In my altered state, I may have as well seen God. I never really got into their later stuff, but they're still one of my all time favorites. I still enjoy cranking up One Of These Days (to 11) and standing between the speakers in the livivng room, and just listen. Baz...thanks for the Video. And up yours, Hard Drive. ![]()

Really??? The only album that I feel that really has a dark demon laying inside of it is The Wall... I think that album has gotten so much attention, that most non Floyd listeners base their views of the band on that one album alone.
I have listened to Floyd since I was young in the 70's but have really taken a deeper dive into their material here recently (and actually paid attention to it). I really think that their music is/was ahead of its time. I think that they are one of the rare bands that started out ehh... and ended up timeless... I listen to their early stuff and find it to be a little too experimental for my own personal tastes, but I believe that their music got better with time. Unlike many bands that shoot their load of creativity within their first album or two and then fade into the ashes... I really believe that alot of their work is plain, flat out masterpieces. Not only do I feel that they are very clever in their lyrics, but the musical arrangements, I just can't comprehend how they put this stuff together compared to normal bands... The only negative thing that I can think of associated with the band is that most people consider you a stoner if you listen to Pink Floyd or if you meet a stoner and mention Pink Floyd that they always want to try and have this deep philosophical discussion of what they think the music means etc... P.S. I wasn't trying to make this post seem like a deep philosophical discussion lol ![]()

Depends on my mood as to what I think is the best one.

Not one mention of The Final Cut?. I would also rate it up there with one of their best works. Sort of an aquired taste. I have to be in the right place in my mind to listen to it.
Fvk all that

It depends if you want to talk tracks or full disks.
I agree that it depends on mood (esp. full disks) but Pulse or Animals are probably the best overall to me. For track favorites: - One of These Days - Us and Them - Sheep - Comfortably Numb - Learning to Fly - On The Turning Away - Keep Talking Imho, Comfortably Numb is the greatest guitar solo of all time I do also really like some of the covers of Pink Floyd disks and tracks: Col. Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Jack Irons version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_La1DckEggA - This is the great bass player & leader of Primus and his jam band doing a version that combines the bass line from "One of these Days" with "Shine On..." Luther Wright & The Wrongs: The Wall - This is the entire disk of The Wall performed Bluegrass style. I know this sounds like an odd combination, but it works. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e2etT1Gtrw (of course, "We Don't Need No Education" has a bit of a different slant when sung country-bluegrass style ;-) ) Austin Lounge Lizards: Brain Damage - Also in Bluegrass style, and it is a hoot!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q75qJ3vCmBw (Fyi, the Austin Lounge Lizards have some prog. rock era/Pink Floyd "cred" as they were formed in the late 70's by 2 Princeton History majors and a philosophy major from U of Georgia) Last edited by dw1; 05-12-2012 at 07:37 AM.. |

I found it to be the best "background" mood music for when I have a date over, FWIW. Another reason to appreciate PF!

Animals no doubt as far as music is concerned.
As far as exploring new territory The Wall is brilliant. |

Sometimes I think there is a deep sadness behind much of their work. Amazing, and hauntingly beautiful. It was very popular at one time to commit suicide while listening to the wall.
I still love them though. |

Maybe not their best offering but I identify great music by time periods in my life.
Dark Side of the Moon and Obscured by Clouds for me. Fresh back from Asia Military service... married the first blonde I met. Had a $80.00 a month apt. Construction job. Would get home and want to relax. A few beers and DSOTM would be on the turntable. My wife and I would sit on the front steps of the old relic apartment because the place had no air conditioning. Summer and in Calif. Played that LP more times than I can even try to remember. To me, it was elevator music. Just nice quality back-ground stuff. Breathe.... breathe in the air..... La, La, La. |

Tough choice. Was at a live performance when they did Animals and hearing them live was over the top. I've been to concerts where the crowd noise bothered me but with that performance, it oddly flowed so right.
Tie between Dark Side of the Moon and Animals. Next would be The Wall. Brilliant stuff.
