Can't you lock down your profile so that only your "friends" can see anything you post. That's how my profile is set (I hope!).

I also make a habit of only adding "real" friends on fb. OK, true...some may be friends from 20 yrs ago but I still know enough about them to know they are not psychopaths. It always amazes me when people have 1000+ friends...maybe I'm just grumpy and no one likes me, but I know maybe 20 people in my life really well - and no desire to expand that. I have less than 100 friends on FB and it has been a great tool to keep in touch.
That said, as an investment, I wouldn't touch it. Yes, they are deeply entrenched but that still does not mean they couldn't fade away in a couple of years when something better comes along. And for me, and I suspect lots of others, if they started to charge even a nominal fee, I'd drop in a heartbeat. I don't see how the monetize the huge "subscriber" base and generate the kind of growth they need long time to justify the valuation. Not gonna happen, in my admittedly un-researched opinion.

I loathe Facebook, it's taking over the Internet and I truly hate it. People used to set up a web page, now it 's "We're on Facebook!". I closed my account over 2 years ago and people tell me my page is still out there and apparently everyone can access it but me.

Jyl, I completely understand your POV. For the most part, I agree. FB, however, gives me just the right amount of connection with random people and I can adjust the level individually or in groups. I can also decide whether to visit the site once a week or several times a day. Or never.
There are a lot of people from my past, and distant relatives, that the right level of connection is knowing that they're alive and seeing occasional family pics, etc. I also know a lot of interesting people from over the years that I wish I still saw but never do, FB at least provides a slight connection w/o taking up anyone's valuable time. It works well for me and apparently for many others, I can also see how it's not for everyone. |

I don't log on, because I can't - I would need an account if I wanted to do that. Cached web info provides a lot more than people realize. Besides, I’m not doing in-depth research on these people’s lives, just a quick glimpse to see if things add up.

Analysts are starting to upgrade FB to a buy as of yesterday. Zucker claims he knows how to get the ad revenue, and mobile is starting to show promise. 1 billion users announced. Shares up 20% yesterday. I think I'm going to load up today. Anyone else looking at it?

I'd really like to know the business plan for getting ad revenue. I have never even thought of clicking on an ad I saw on FB. I hate them and wish there were a way to block them. Who clicks on these? Advertisers might get visibility, but I don't see how any company really expects click-thrus on FB ads. Google is a different ballgame because it replaced the Yellow Pages, where people went when they were ready to buy. No one goes to FB to look for stuff to buy. They go there for other things, so ads distract them. I just don't see FB changing this. There's definitely some value in having an ad on a site with the kind of traffic FB gets. But the click-thru rates have to be dismal.

Would you also like to give up the GUI's and go back to typing everything in DOS also? A webpage can be just as vapid and narcissistic as a facebook account, computers are just machines, they only reflect who is behind the keyboard.
