I live in the Santa Rosa Valley. Boerboels came from Zimbabwe. I flew Tank here in a crate  We have a problem here with coyotes eating small and medium sized dogs. Then a mountain lion showed up and took a 100 lbs lab, a German Shepard, and a llama. When my previous dog died :(, I needed a dog large enough to limit that risk, but still athletic enough to go on aggressive hikes and short mountain bike rides. After a lot of Google research, at 145 pounds and able to jump a 6' fence, the Boerboel fit the bill. Boerboels were originally bred by the Dutch settlers in South Africa ("the Boers"). They needed a dog large enough to keep leopards and lions away from the livestock, and athletic enough to work a flock or herd. They bred Mastiff's with some large athletic African dogs and European herding dogs. Tank is a great dog, but requires a very dominant owner. The drawback to Boerboels is dog aggression. It's taken a lot of work to get him to mellow out around other dogs, and he's still no dog park dog. I don't recommend them for a city house or apt. I live on a large property that's fairly remote. Caught him pimp'n! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341101890.jpg Tree'd a bobcat :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341101918.jpg |

Being single and traveling a ton doesn't allow me to have a dog of my own, much as I'd love to have one. Instead, I get my dog fix at the local SPCA as a volunteer behaviorist. Whenever, there's a big dog with aggression problems that need to be worked on, the professional trainers throw it my way.
Today was a gorgeous 91# Malinois mix who tends to be a resource guarder. Awesome dog and a big baby. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341177820.jpg |
RacerX - Bless you sir.....a wonderful example to set for the next generation. Selfless, considerate, and a generous caring soul.
I dub ye "The Dog Whisperer" SmileWavy I help with transporting rescues when I can - here's "Freckles" - a deaf Red Heeler on route to her new home last year. Her coat was the softest I've ever felt....she spent some time with a behaviourist afterwards as well and is now a wonderful companion for her new human. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341178580.jpg |
Baz, good on you too, for helping homeless animals find forever homes. It's so rewarding to know the effort you put forth helps both dog and its new family.
The plus side to doing what I do is when I was dating, chicks fell all over me. 'You have a Porsche and work with homeless animals?' http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...eys/nahnah.gif Quote:

Please spay and neuter - there are too many dogs in shelters.....or here's one person's view on whether you should allow breeding or not....YMMV:

The Sampson County (N.C.) Sheriff's Office does not tolerate animal cruelty. Sgt. Stacey Colbourne and Deputy Ray Draughon found this dog locked in car in Walmart Parking lot. By the time owner came out...there were 6 law enforcement officers waiting for him and the dog was no longer in the vehicle. :) |
Wow! Nine years flies by quickly.

It's a stuffed dog but sends a message to those who are clueless....whether they listen or not is another story. This time of year too many dogs die from heat stroke when left inside vehicles. Please spread the word!!! |

Here's one I asked a friend to do of my Mom's boxer for a Mother's Day gift. I would love to find someone else who does this kind of thing on the side. These portraits make great gifts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341545896.jpg |
Thanks, I did that myself. I was working on three paintings simultaneously, and at the end of every night I'd take the left over paint off the palete and spread it on a spare canvas I had around the studio. at the end of the week il looked like that...There's alot of paint on that canvas. Some are is over 1/2" thick.
|
I think it's great. Do you think it's worth it to try to sell paintings like that? I'd buy one. Thanks for sharing.
|
not sure...If I was to buy the art materials for this painting including the canvas I'd have $200 in materials alone.... Not sure enough people would be willing to pay to justity the time

A rescue from down under "Specks" - at Navua Reserve

Here are our Labs, Layla and Molly, who have become our surrogate children since both of our boys have moved on to college.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341769658.jpg Layla is still hyper even at six and as anyone who owns a Lab can contest, they love the water. Layla is no exception but she does have one quirk; she despises damp grass.....Layla will walk fifty yards on a sidewalk or road to avoid walking five feet in wet grass. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341769898.jpg Molly is slowing down a little but she's in better shape than most dogs half her age. Here she is taking a little siesta after a long day on the lake with the family. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341770050.jpg |
