Cattle Dogs use their tail as a rudder and for balance when they are running. They also are characterised by a white tip which allows better visibility at night by the rancher.

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...82961547_n.jpg

In Australia it is against the law to dock their tail.

In the US we have no such law and thus many poor Cattle Dogs lose their tail to ignorant humans - who believe it is the breed standard or that it makes a more maintenance free herder :(

Here's our furkids

Jack - 13yo Chocolate Border Collie

Hugo - 1yo Black and White Border Collie
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1341925436.jpg

and this is Lilly (Hugo's sister) - she's not ours but is having a sleepover (again) for a few weeks.

We also have Gemma (who lives next door) - She's also a sister of Hugo and Lilly's but from a later litter and is often over to play.

Simon

Rescued 7 years ago. Don't know how old he is, don't know what breed mixture, don't know where he came from.

But really glad he rescued me & my family.

I'm sure Simon thinks he's the one who was rescued - look at that handsome boy! Please give him a belly rub from my girls. :p

Beautiful BC's there too, Jeff!

Here's a friend's ACD named "No Worries Jake" :)

This is Theresa. Best dog in the world. Picture was taken just before the boy caught her tongue as she was trying to lick her nose. She would let the kids do anything to her but wouldn't let anyone near them. Treated them like they were her puppies.

Brent,

Wow - Theresa is so beautiful!

How did she get her name?

Dogs are the best, aren't they? :p

Baz- We found her on the dumped on the side of the road with her puppy. The puppy was hit by a car and she was running in the road trying to pull it off. We stopped and moved the puppy out of the road and she came over and leaned on me. We called animal control and they came and got her. After a week she was going to be put down and they called and asked if we would take her. We kept calling her the mother dog, so she became Mother Theresa. The funny thing is the name really fit her. She had a thing for kids and babies especially. When we had parties at the house if someone had a baby she wouldn't leave their side. The one time she was walking on her hind legs following a guy so she could look at a baby peeking over his shoulder.

Baz 07-13-2012 12:47 PM

Hi Brent,

Thanks for the explanation - it's a great story. Your kids are very fortunate that their parents rescued this beautiful furkid - and she was brought into the family. Your children will never forget the power of compassion.

She's obviously as beautiful inside as she is out.

:)

Sadly we lost her right before Easter (toughest hole I had to dig thread).

We rescued another lab a couple weeks ago. She has some anxiety and behavioral issues but we are working through them. I will post a couple pictures of her. She is blind in one eye and when we asked what her name was they told us it was Jackie. Go figure. She is a very polite retriever and will lay down and put the retrieved object on her feet for you. Works good for the kids. I need to get a couple pics of her up here.

In his day, Bentley did also. Now he generally points to food.

Here is a crappy cell phone pict I took of him when he saw a bunny in the front yard.

If you didn't know about this horrible tragedy here's the thread:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/689711-hit-run-driver-severely-injures-2-people-kills-4-dogs.html#post6864701

I'm sending a card and donation in to the couple. Not a lot but enough to show as a dog owner I care. We need to crack down on these repeat offenders....this is totally unacceptable

The incident has prompted an outpouring of donations for the two victims, and readers wishing to contribute to help the pair can make out checks to the Harison Long-Randall/Gemily West Fund and mail them to Pam Dinsmore, community affairs director, The Sacramento Bee, 2100 Q St., Sacramento, Ca 95816.
