The 3 Rolex official service centers in the US are in NYC, Dallas and LA. The one in SF is a little different.

Yup, you ship it in a correct sized box with brown paper tape, they are very specific. I now know from a mistake that the only place that makes authorized repairs is one of those three centers.

I took a Breitling to auth. dealer where I bought it for an overhaul. They sent it to a local watch repair guy, who was Breitling-authorized. Of course, they marked up his charges, but it was still around $320 six yrs. ago. I went to buy some spring bars locally a year ago and the guy told me he was Breitling-authorized too, said my ChronoAvenger would run $600 for an overhaul. I guess chronos are a lot more work. I go to a Sinn dealer near Cologne for my Sinns. They have a full workshop and retail store there, so you can watch them work. It's pretty cool.

I had one of those giant Omegas and the hands came loose.
Took it to a guy on 47th street who said he would send it back to the factory for repairs. A couple months later I picked it up, dirt on the face, hands came loose again a week later. This time I sent it to the authorized Omega repair station in Pennsylvania somewhere, and told them I wanted them to stand behind the work. They said, "We have no record of your serial number." The SCHMUCK on 47th probably took it to a local watchmaker and stung me an arm and a leg for inferior repairs. So the moral. . . get the name of the authorized repair center directly from the manufacturer and ship it there yourself. If there really is a USD/CHF aribtrage, the cost of shipping to Zurich round trip would more than offset the difference in price. My Sinn is back in Frankfurt for the THIRD time since 2003. A long story having to do with the power reserve indicator failing over and over again. They keep repairing it for me, did it once for free, now they propose to sting me for 90 Euro. Why do we like mechanical watches again?

Back in the 1980's I sported a Datejust self winder / wanker. That thing never kept what I would consider 'accurate' time. Yes, I did have the dealer, clean and service it and candidly was told they're not the best timekeepers. Imagine that, a Rolex dealer telling you this after spending a few thou for a frickn' watch?! Also, the 14k gold and stainless bracelet links would wear out loose. That watch matches the image of the whale tail on my 1984 911 (that tail has to go). I have a British made auto-winder Timex from 1970 that keeps better time! But these days my favorite is a stainless steel Casio analog face watch, solar charged (holds 15 days total darkeness) and is atomic timed. The most amazing thing was paying $18.00 clearance at a Kohl's store. Zero maintenence and I don't need to wank anymore...L.

The band would have lasted a lot longer had you kept it clean. Gold is soft, so it does wear faster. Still, I've owned Rolex watches with 18kt bands that were still tight after 20 years. It's all in how they are adjusted, how they are used and how they are maintained. I've had probably a dozen of their watches and all of them kept good time. The most recent one I bought is an Explorer I. When it was new, it would neither gain or lose a second each day. It was dead nuts on; easily the most accurate mechanical watch I've ever owned. JR |
