Rick & Joe have it figured out, and that's the way it should be.

I see that a bit differently. When I hear a tv announcer say "gosh", I kind of think they're being respectful of God and the word's use. I think the overusage of "Oh my God!" for everything and anything is disrespectful. I like the use of "gosh" when someone is responding to a great baseball catch, or a cool pair of shoes, or a great new beer, or a slick new car, or a beautiful woman in skimpy clothes, or an awesome steak prepared just right, or a sweet find on CL, or a shocking expose' on E! TV, or the discovery of a $100 bill in some old jacket, or a acceptance letter to a college.

I think Hollywood/TV/highschools/etc has shoved "Oh my God!" into every possible situation that the term's real meaning is lost. And the icing of that cake is the term "OMFG!". Yeah, thanks a ton for that one.

I still wear an American flag on my lapel. Still take my hat off when the national Anthem is being played or going in a building. Still carry a pocket knife in my pocket, still open doors for ladies.

Its the way I was taught by my parents... not going to stop being that way. Is it "old fashioned?" Possibly but for me its simply the right way to be...
yup. And don't forget complimenting the ladies in a polite way.

What? You mean "I'd sure love to motorboat THOSE!" isn't polite?

We recently had a job opening for which I had the dubious responsibility of screening candidates via phone, email, etc. prior to bringing them in for an on-site interview. On-sites take time away from our engineers and money away from our budget. These candidates were sent (in the form of resumes) to us from our HR department.

NOT A SINGLE ONE of the candidates we received was a white male. There were plenty, though, who COMPLETELY FAILED to meet ANY of the requirements listed in our job description.

I find it interesting that our HR department would be willing to champion diversity in lieu of quality.

i recently met an engineer i have been working with on the phone..

when we met, we shook hands and he said, "wow, i thought you were a white guy"...i feigned disgust, and said i was gonna call HR..

he flat out turned white (ohh..pun city) when the blood drained from his face.. i laughed and said..i was just effen with him. never expected him to almost feint.. i should really use my powers for good.
in general, people are super gun-shy these days with PC..

I've never worked with an HR group that knew the diff between a viable candidate and a waste of time.

I used to let them do their thing out of courtesy and did my own recruiting on the side.

They'd send up a stack of resumes and I'd send back a couple "from their stack" that I was interested in.

It is one of the Ten Commandments to "not take the Lord's name in vain". Therefore, you are breaking that by using "My God" as an exclamation unless it is being used to praise Him. If you are not religious then I think it is rather offensive to flaunt your non-compliance with other's religious beliefs and I question why you would use the phrase if God means nothing to you.

I have great respect for Joe and also open doors for ladies and remove my hat for the national anthem... however some people I know feel that OMG is frivolous and disrespectful.
YMMV

More of my life has been spent as a technician then an engineer. Maybe we should make it "engineering month" vs. "engineers month". That sounds like a much better party.

"God" is not the Lord's name. Look it up if you don't believe me.

Or do you say "Polytheism is the belief in many goshes"?

For that matter, if you're a Christian and believe that Jesus is the Lord, "Jesus Christ" isn't his name either.

Off to PARF we go....

Yup and I have been known to knock a hat off a guy during the anthem. I still fly the flag on the front of my house, and did so before 9-11.

....
I'm not a religious person, but was brought up by ultra-conservative, extremely religious parents, and agree with the above. My dad would have cured me of such REAL quick .

Since we may already be PARFy, I've got a question for ya: Look it up where...on tablet number one that Moses brought down? Which begs a couple of questions: Why don't folks of the Jewish faith and Muslims (both worshiping the God of Abraham) only have 9 commandments, and why didn't that 3rd commandment have folks scratching their heads for a few thousand years if Max's perspective is NOT what it means . Oh wait...nevermind....

As much as I hate to pour gasoline on the fire...

BlueSky may have been referring to the fact that the Jewish people revered the name of you know who to the point where they would not utter the name but for conveyance came up the alternate Yahweh (but Oh MY Yahweh! Doesn't run off the tough so well).

Or he may be referring to the fact that the bible was original written in Hebrew, Arabic, and Greek therefore our English translation of the ancient words are not equivalent.

Or maybe something else...
