Local company making wheels right here in Adelaide South Australia.

They effectively have one product & at $3,499 AUD they're not cheap!

Question for you experts!

The gf and I are looking for bikes, mostly to tootle around surface streets and rail-trail type off roading. Brands found in bike stores are way over her budget, and places like Dicks Sporting Goods sell brands I've never heard of. Searching Craigslist reveals a bevy of choices at all price ranges.

Any advice regarding what to look for? A new "hybrid" bike? Or a used ____ bike? It would probably have to be attainable for <$300 to be in her budget. Doesn't have to be super top of the line.

Well, light weight aluminum frame, upright riding position. Single gear or an internal 3 speed hub would meet your requirements. Dorky, but nice to have, a front basket or detachable panniers (saddle bags). My Dachshund loved riding with me on the strand bike path ogling the Betties.....some bastard stole my bike and an urban Coyote ate my dog. So those two events ended that adventure.

Good luck on your search.

Craigslist!
By quality used.

Try a bike shop and sit on a few bikes to get sizing and shop pink bike or Craig's or local buy and sell.

I think determining what is a good $$/brand/type ratio that's getting me. Plus there seems to be endless manufacturers and used prices are everywhere.

For example, these bikes all seem to be functionally similar. What makes one better than the other?

Then there are bikes like this for many multiples in price.

1) stay away from department store bikes

They are heavy, carry blingy looking components to entice you, but sacrafice quality for quantity
Difficult to maintain

2) if you are looking for a multi speed bike, educate yourself on group sets (gears and brakes)

That's usually the difference between two otherwise identical bikes

Avoid anything with components made out of cheap looking tin stampings ( just walk through a department store and a bike shop for visual cues

3) buy used name brand or new lower end name brand
Do this once your know what you are looking at

used bikes one fairly dependable clue to better quality
is QUICK RELEASE LEVERS ON THE WHEELS
most cheap bikes willNOT have them just nuts [bmx excepted]
another clue is pick up the bike heavy is not good
buy anything that has campagnolo parts

If you are a newbie to cycling, go to your local bike shop. Trust them to find the right bike for your riding style and price point. Comfort over weight.

Very cool Byron,
I also had a chrome GJS with Jeff Bottema forks! I also had an earlier blue one with the larger diameter tube on it. Want to sell it?

Not a lot of action in this thread lately, so here's something to bump it back to the top.

I took two nasty spills a couple weeks ago and decided to take a break waiting for the raspberries to heal. Finally got out today and came across this awesome looking rigid singlespeed Salsa. I wanted to ask the owner what the specs were but he disappeared into the bathroom for a while so I took off. Does anyone know what we're looking at here?
