Not this above bike of course, but amazing to think in 1938 at the Technical Trials, showed a fully equipped with wide tires, fenders, lights and a rack, it weighed just 7.94 kg (17.5 lb).

I'm thinking I just read about that bike, but if I recall correctly it had an aluminum frame. I'm gonna check on my google-foo and see if I can recall that information......

Looking at the lugs & drop outs, that isn't aluminum, way too thin, plus, the seat mast is also too thin.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1376271339.jpg

Yeah I was thinking of another totally different bike, with cast or forged parts that got fashioned into a frame...

My google foo is weak, can't find it....

Couldn't resist this Sunday AM flea market giveaway. Not sure of the age but its scuzzy. Pics taken right after a can of WD40 and air in the tires. JC Higgins made in Austria, sold by Sears. Austria Styria hubs, working 3 speed, dynamo. Lugged frame surprisingly light. Leather saddle, horsehair padded plus full springing. Rides nice.

Thinking of just pulling the bars, fenders, chain guard and leave the frame paint as is. Add vintage drop bars, replace the rims, keep the hubs and make it a rat racer.

I had one of those when I was a kid, exactly like that, I think it's still hanging in my dads shed. It's a three speed right? Mine looked much worse than that 30 years ago. That is a nice survivor.

intakexhaust 08-13-2013 04:49 PM

Shane- Thanks. Would you happen to know what year production this is? Indeed a 3 speed. Has a lock-out detent lever and works perfect. From only what I'm finding, guessing it's 1959 / 1960, made by Steyr Daimler Puch. Don't think its worth much which is surprising. Mass produced welded lug frame is respectable and fairly light.

Fun evening project. The parts I'm pulling will be set aside and kept complete. However just started to gather period racer parts - stem, drop bars, post and saddle. Looking for pedals. Building a set of vintage NOS ally Weinmann hoops, DT spokes around the original hubs. Undecided on rubber. The frame patina is just fine and will be left as is.

snbush67 08-13-2013 08:52 PM

I have no idea the date of production, you're research sounds about right. I'm glad you are leaving the frame patina, very cool.
