A major factor with cycling is body weight. Those extra pounds make things VERY difficult. I always get a kick out of these guys who show up on their $5000 15-pound carbon wonderbikes ... and they're 25+ pounds overweight My usual weekday ride is a flat 20-mile loop with no rest stops - a comfortable pace is around 17, when my legs feel good I do it an hour (20MPH average with several hard stop sign sprints mixed in, a decent workout for a 56-year old ). We usually do a 40-60 mile ride on the weekends with a couple of 5-10 minute rest stops.

1 MPH average speed increments in cycling are huge! And always remember Greg LeMond's famous quote :

And can somebody edit that Vimeo video a few posts back so it doesn't auto-play every time you click on this thread!!

Keep up the spinning Z-man! I can relate to what it feels like riding after some time away.

In my younger days would clock 200 to 300 miles week including commute (thank god for shower and a locker room). But a busy timeline in life changed that routine. Family, schedule and the worst, my high end bikes were stolen so that deflated riding for some time. These days now riding a mix of vintage road bikes and a newer hybrid / frame geo more towards the road type.

Routine (3-4 X per week) ride a fun quick 13 mile loop, consisting only 15% asphalt, the rest is technical off-road, to gravel.... just rode this AM My hybrid has a rigid straight fork and 700 x 32C semi knobbies. I also ride once a week a 34 mile backroad hilly loop. I average 15 to 16 mph on 700x25C slick tires, wear a camelback to minimize the weight below and helps on climbs. I have two sets of wheels for this bike for a quick change and saves time from changing tires and gearing. Something you might consider for your hybrid. If you have straight bars, I found adding a set of road style 'drop bar-ends' are the way to go.

A week and half ago rode to a clubs invitation century, did the century (got lost too on part of it... extra miles) and rode home. 138 miles on a hybrid with a tick over 16 avg. speed.. surprised myself for mostly riding solo. Swapped tires to a 23C width, used road drop bar-ends and sported the camelback ha. Tried my best to hang with a peloton of carbon fiber bike nascar riders but couldn't for long. Plus I knew better to reserve my energy. Redemption came later on in the ride when I passed a few of them uphill... he, he. Another century ride planned for this weekend.

Sorry, didn't know that was happening.

Mtb. season for me now. 2-3 rides per week, 20-25 mile ea. @ 10-11 mph avg. Not much elevation around here, but we have a good 50 or so miles of XC single track locally. Not real technical, but tight and fast.

Out of the once junk now clean and fresh. Kind of like finding little things for a 356.

Been trying to get in as much riding as possible before the cold temps make it more difficult. Yesterday, did a 15 mile loop in the park system with the multi-use path. Time: 1 hour, 9 minutes; pace was 13.02 mph. Today, I hit the park again for a shorter stint - 11 miles in 50 minutes @ 13.5 mph. According to my splits, I actually achieved 15.06mph average on mile 2, and my slowest pace was 12.45mph. I know - slow and short - but I haven't been in the saddle in over 15 years, and my hybrid bike isn't really made for speed.

So what type of distances and speeds do you folks see? How often do you ride?

I am so glad I got back into riding - I've been enjoying it a lot - and I feel more energetic now too!
-Z-man.
Not really suppose to ride hard, but I'm coaching a local BMX team and that at least gets me back on the track
