Culture shock....
First time in Arizona for 25 years. We went to Prescott for about a week. Noticed lots of senior citizens in this town. We were two of them.
Other things observed: 1. Cheaper booze, particularly wine at 1/2 to 2/3 price of back home. 2. Great service wherever we went -hotels, restaurants. 3. Great Mexican food. 4. No bus service, many cars and fewer sidewalks. When we talked to a few of the walkers, a couple wanted to sell us real estate! 5. Great food products - spent $$$ at Trader Joes. Cheaper than Canada. 6. Friendly people - discussions ranged from health care to uh well real estate. 7. Good hiking trails outside of town. 8. Inside town hiking trails' exits are spiked to prevent non payment. Would definitely go back to Prescott. Just a comment about Phoenix. An awful lot of traffic. Rentacar strategically located on the north side of town - N Black Canyon for a quick exit to leave Dodge. Garmin Gps mandatory to help navigate our trusty Nissan Sentra.I asked for a Ford Focus but got the Sentra instead. Papadeau's was a great seafood restaurant on Black Canyon - menu ranges from frogs legs, alligator to soft shelled crabs.Saw only 3 Porsches all week and two of them were Caymans. Anyway thanks Prescott/Phoenix for a great holiday. Pics maybe later! |

Prescott's traffic is usually worse than Phoenix's, though on a smaller scale. I used to love going there, but will only do so during weekdays now. It's getting unbearable there. Lots of the old folks are snowbirds here just for the winter. Booze in AZ is dirt, dirt cheap. I can't imagine it's cheaper anywhere else in the US. A 1.75 litre bottle of Maker's Mark is $33 by my house. It was $45 at the cheap state line stores in MD and $55 in VA. Except for real estate, everything you can buy in Prescott, you can buy much cheaper in Phoenix if you know where to shop.

Went to Prescott about 20+ years ago thinking I'd take a look at it as a retirement option for the future. It was really nice. Fast forward a few years or more ago when I went through there again, and it had all kinds of housing developments, shopping malls, etc., etc. outside of the old portion of town. That ruined it for me.

that aint culture shock..
![]() culture shock is if you go to pick up your rental car, and the counter lady is butchering a pig while topless..and has a chicken head burning on the fire as an offering to her ancestors. and she offers you a fried goat eyeball as a snack. .that's culture shock; not cheap pricing on smoked salmon, and someone saying hello. hahaha. welcome to america!! just messing with you..i like Prescott!

Very glad to hear you had fun! I live in the far east valley and love it but honestly I wouldn't mind living closer to downtown. Arcadia area, south Scottsdale, downtown Phoenix.
This is from O.H.S.O nano-Brewery last Sunday looking at Camelback Mtn.

I lived in Prescott for eight years, love the town and area. Back in the nineties some magazine (Money, I think..?) voted Prescott "Best Place to Retire". After that the town exploded and started to change. LOTS of retirees, mostly from California. Still a great place but the population explosion changed the character of the place.

Be certain to load up on the sunscreen if you come back in the warmer months! It doesn't take long to get crispy. Those are some great shots.
And I have to admit, I've yet to hike in the Sedona or Oak Creek areas. I need to get off my butt and do those.

You have to pay to walk on the hiking trails. ?????

In Canada we have National Park passes which cover different park areas. In Arizona the hiking trails are locally run. Some have entrance fees at each trail area. We found the hiking trails outside of town less regulated and monitored.
