Don't forget your "expensive" maintenance on your cheap 996.

Pelican:

$85 Gear oil, air filter, oil filter, crush washer

Oriley:

$58 Mobile 1 0-40 9 qts.

$143

Can't avoid that maintenance. But without Pelican this would have been a much more expensive trip to the dealer.

(Now for Thanksgiving I need to replace all of the coolant hoses)

Isn't this the same guy & car we discussed earlier in this thread? A blue coupe in Newburgh NY that wouldn't idle after a major service.

Test drives. Have you talked with him yet? ( on the blue car )

Sort of. he said it's at a shop, so I said 'well if you're fixing it I guess the price will change'. He sais 'come and take it for $12k if you want it'. So either he is fed up, or he knows it's trashed, or it's not really at a shop.

He did volunteer to have the car ready to see on Saturday (i.e. he would bring it back from the shop).

He says it drives fine, just won't idle since he had it detailed.

Then it got hard to talk to him, a toddler was yelling into the phone and he seemed to think that was normal so our conversation ended before I could ask about driving it.

Sounds too shady for me to drive a long way. I would go an hour to see it, he's 4+ hours from me, and I'm not sure I want to deal with him.

Good call, that does sound familiar.

Are coolant hoses difficult to deal with on those, or more likely a cracked fitting on whatever the coolant hose attaches to?

Wayne covers the hose replacement in his 101 projects book for the 996/997.

There is also an article on this site that shows the parts needed and estimates timing & cost.

I don't think that is the same car. The other guy was listed by a person who couldn't write (or speak) English. Or I could be wrong....

t-tom...you can say that again!

150K is some miles - not tough on the drive train really, thinking interior wear.

It's probably better for my marriage that the last two were tiptronic :p

I think I'm going to start negotiating a turbo this spring.

The ad reads - "true miles are unknown" - whatever that means.

Holy smokes! No sunroof AND white! Minor unicorn here. Would buy.

I still see the '99-'01s going for low teens, but the <'02s still seem to be holding their own for the most part. I guess the updated body, cup holders and glove box are worth a few thousand!

Pretty sure it has a sunroof, in the second picture you can see the lateral seam. The 996 sunroof hides pretty well in photos, there's not much gasket that shows.

Jim Richards 12-10-2015 04:49 AM

It's visible in this picture.

I don't get the dislike for sunroofs. My older 911 had one and I used it all the time.

VincentVega 12-10-2015 07:51 AM

I sure would appreciate the extra headroom w/o one.

How tall are you? I'm 6'1" and didn't have any issues in my 996.
