That Targa isn't obscene, they seem to bring more money. Though the tip will hurt.

There seem to still be a number of C4S in the low to mid $30k range. I really question if they are really selling for that money, considering 997 and 996TT prices are in that same range.

They aren't, at least from what I have seen. My neighbor tried listing his '03 C4S for $45k a couple weeks before they move late last year. Great condition, somewhat low miles but he was never going to get that, even with the right buyer. Saw him 2 weeks ago at the store and he's still driving it, after lowering the price to $38k. He said that was the lowest he would go...I was thinking to myself "Then I hope you enjoy driving it because you will for some time to come"

Oh, I've played that game before. Wife wants me to clear some space in the garage, rumblings of 'Sell one of those damn motorcycles!'. Ok, no problem.

My craigslist ad: "1993 Ducati Supersport. Leaks oils. Some wear and tear. Driven hard and put away wet by a guy with a death wish. $8000, FIRM."

Looked at this 2002 Boxster S today. Price is $13K, I could have made an offer of $12 and walked away with the car. With 55K miles, it drives beautifully. Owner encouraged me to really flog it. My impressions:

it's fast. a little faster than my 84 but doesn't feel like it's going fast.

Instills confidence. With a little seat time, you could be very fast at the track with with a car like this. Felt unflappable. This was the best part of the car by far.

Sound. If you've never had a 911, the sound would be fine. otherwise would need some sort of exhaust mod.

Convertible wasn't as "wow" as I remember driving a 69 MGB I had long ago.

Owner is a very nice young guy that wants to buy a house and do something with a boat he has. If I didn't have the 84, I would have bought it. BUT, and this is only for me, I don't think it would be as fun as a 911. It's a little too refined for my taste.

Suspect that with a 3.4 and 300hp this car would be perfect as a daily driver. I'd like to know how you can/if you can take 200-300lbs out of them.

Shaun, the Boxster is a great car. I personally think mine was the most fun Porsche that I've owned. Like the 996 they are way too quiet stock, intake and exhaust mods make them feel like a proper Porsche. The Boxster has an intake silencer that can be removed in about 5 minutes with simple hand tools and gives it a nice little howl over your left shoulder. You can also do the "Fister mod", a partial muffler bypass that gives a great sound at WOT but subtle at cruise. A local shop did mine for $60 on both 996 cans.

This thread from 6speedonline is the most comprehensive list of 986/996 component weights that I've seen. It's on the 996TT forum, but basically everything forward of the front seats is the same on the 986. I think it would be a challenge to get that much weight out of a 986 without getting crazy. I bet 100-150 lbs would be pretty easy by removing the spare, swapping for lightweight seats, and lightweight wheels.

Nice car Shaun. But that's not play money any more - at least not in my book. $6k I could swing and just toss the thing when it blows up.

I drove an S and it was an impressive car. I liked the convertible feel - was very quiet even at high speed. Guy just wanted too much at 13.5k with 118k miles or thereabouts. It is still on CL and nobody has bought it for 12 asking either. This one was the newer version with the 2 extra HP and nicer headlamps.

Ultimately I decided to stay with the air cooled stuff. Every time I hooked up an OBDII things got scary on these cars for me.

A friend of mine was all set to pick up a 996 convertible today, a 2004 with only 4,000 miles on it.

She was asking 50k, he had her talked down to 40K.

When I bumped into him yesterday I asked if the main rear main bearing IMS upgrade had been done to it.

He looked all puzzled at me, and said what work could it possibly need, it only has 4,000 miles on it.

I've been telling him for at least three years what to look for and to get PPI first. However, it was like he was hearing it all for the first time.

His other friend confirmed that IMS is a possible issue on that year, and he called to thank me for the information later on that evening.

I told him not to get cold feet, check out the car and just plan on getting the fix done per the link below:

Pelican Technical Article: Boxster Intermediate Shaft Bearing Replacement and Upgrade (IMS) - 986 Boxster (1997-04) - 987 Boxster (2005-06)

I told him that he would not buy a $40,000 boat without having the hull and engine checked out, and that a PPI is just due diligence as like when buying land/property.

He's scared off now I think. Now talking about buying off-season to get a "better deal". He doesn't do anything without getting the "best deal".

For sure that's a $40k car. If there's $15k of cash in the glove box.

From the website below a 2004 rag top with between 25,000-50,000 miles is worth in the range of 43,00-53,000.

How is a 2004 with only 4,000 miles worth $25,000?

This. The only 996 worth $40k is a low mileage TT or a GT3. Who cares if it's low mileage, it's not a collector car.

I don't think my friend wants a 100,000 mile car, even if it's a Porsche. Sort of apples to oranges anyway.

As for other pricing, if your comments run contrary the the bulk of this thread in that regard, I'll thank you for your opinion.

The bulk of this thread is on higher mileage cars with a whole lot of life still in them, thereby representing a good value to the purchaser, right?

Low mileage cars of any make or model are always sought after, sometimes just for the novelty of the low mileage. Not my thing, but there is a market.

The warning I gave my friend was of dried out seals, a leaky battery and other items which show up over neglect or via non-use.

Let us know if he buys it, I could use a good laugh. Because a garden variety 996 convertible with low miles selling for the same price as a GT3, TT, or 997S is pure comedy.

'Sought after' and 996 rarely overlap. Absent the letters TT, S, or GT3 I would say 'never' should precede your statement.

I would also add that anyone who is prepared to pay $40k and is subsequently caught off guard by a suggestion that the IMS may need to be done is hardly an educated buyer.

It would appear he came very close to not getting 'the best deal' this time.

Crisis averted (IMO).

Based on the limited inventory and stable pricing, the only 996s that qualify for "sought after" are the GT2 and GT3. The convertible, BTW, is probably the least sought after of all 996s.

You have to wonder how many buyers are looking to pay top dollar for a ultra low mile 996. That '04 should be ~ $30K and even then might take a long time to sell. Crisis averted +1.

Okay, let's find my friend a car.

Located in SE Michigan preferred.

He's not going to tinker with it as he typically leases his cars and runs several business.

A convertible apparently.
