I notice that almost every one of the lower priced cars that have been posted recently are the "big headlight" models, and I don't think any of them had the factory aero package. So if I go any lower I am giving it away at the price level of less desirable cars, it seems.

I would start the auction at $1 with a reserve at a price you can best tolerate. Let the bidders take it from there. That's the fun of it all. |

I agree with Java. A high start point means the auction never gets started...better to just use a reserve or 'Buy It Now'.

Your car does not have the factory Aerokit, those are 996 mk1 Aerokit side skirts and rear tail (folded taco) with a factory front bumper. Running your VIN shows options of "flared rocker panels" and "Carrera rear spoiler" which is interesting. So maybe they offered the mk1 side skirts and tail as individual options on the mk2 cars? Starting 8/01 the factory Aerokit had the sharper slashed looking side skirts, front bumper with a splitter look lower, and the pedestal rear wing, basically it looks like a GT3. You seem to have removed the reference to the transmission issue, is that fixed?

Here's a link to the correct mk2 Aerokit: Suncoast Porsche Parts & Accessories 996 Coupe Aerokit II
Btw, by saying "pickup only" you just eliminated the vast majority of EBay buyers. You would be far better off saying that it is the buyer's responsibility to arrange shopping and that the vehicle must be paid in full prior to release for shipping.

Suncoast Porsche Parts & Accessories Aerokit II Side Skirts So you're saying that instead of the $5,400 Aero Kit II, that I have an $8,000 Carrera rear spoiler? That should be better for my car's value, right? Quote:

The mk1 side skirts have a softer edge and a distinct twist, the mk2 have a sharper straight edge. I had a wrecked 2000 that had been improperly repaired with one mk2 skirt, so I've been down that road. It is definitely a mk1 spoiler, the mk2 is much different. Value is of course in the eye of the beholder but it is definitely unique which I think is cool.
As for the transmission issue, that's a pretty big deal. If it were me, I would list it for sure.

For the early 996s there were two aero kits available: 1. "Cup" Aero Kit. This included the "soft edge" (Mk1) aero side skirts, front bumper, and "folded taco" GT3/Cup tail. 2. "Carrera" Aero Kit. This included the "soft edge (mk1) aero side skirts, front bumper, and "Carrera" tail. As seen with CF's car, you could order the tail and side skirts separately from the complete kit.

I had two interested parties at $16,000
One could not swing the funds. The other was just a deadbeat who did not follow through on my ebay auction. Today I bought a new (to me) pickup, and would like to go ahead and move the car to a new owner. I know it's not a cream-puff, but I also cannot "give it away". The truck dealership offered me $15,000 for trade-in. Believing that trade-in money is mostly just lies and paperwork, I would rather sell it for $15,000 than trade it in. (Was that a "wrong move"??) Hell, if nothing else - wouldn't it be the basis for a good track car?? Is anyone here interested at $15,000 ? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/919375-2002-996-sunroof-coupe-20-000-a.html#post9285099

I finally got around to test driving a 996 for the first time. I was really curious about how it would be to drive.
My first 911 was an SC targa then I upgraded to a 964 coupe. Most recently I drove a 993 Targa and a 997 with PDK, neither of which I particularly enjoyed. The 993 felt heavy and the steering and suspension was both soft and had too much weight behind it. The 997 was very luxurious and fast but the PDK was just too easy, I didn't feel involved with the driving experience. The 996 felt somewhere in the middle of the two, which makes perfect sense. The controls were very nice, the clutch and shifter felt great. The steering was good, though the steering wheel felt too big. The interior is nothing special but the seating position was great. So I was happily surprised in how enjoyable it was to drive, but I didn't love this particular 996. Silver and black is just so mundane, and this car also has some electrical issues that the dealer blamed on a bad battery, but I think could be the alternator. The car can only be started with a booster and the gauges were a little funky. They had to replace the fuel pump recently too. I think it has been sitting for a while. For now the hunt for a 996 is on the back burner especially since our DailyDriver VW needs to be replaced sooner than later. But, I still want another 911 and the 996 is the only affordable option.

Here in GA, that $15k trade-in would have reduced the purchase price of the truck being bought, which in effect would save the sales tax of that amount on your purchase. (Ex: sales tax of 7% on $15k = $950 savings). Not sure about SC law.

In WA, a high sales tax state at 9%, the law is the same. The $15k reduction, reduces the tax. I sold my GTI a few years back. Dealt with CL idiots for a while offering me what the dealer was in trade. Finally traded it in. It ended up being much easier.

IIRC, SC has a $300 max tax, no matter if it's new or used.

This thread has been dormant for several months. And I am thinking about another 996 as a DE car. Has pricing changed much? Still find a decent to good car for under $18K?
