Need recos for a road warrior
So my gf bought an 01 Saab 9-3 because it looks cute and is a convertible, however, she needs a car that can run 1200 miles every other weekend. What she really needs is a used, inexpensive, road warrior, reliable, and good on gas. The reason we are looking is because the saab is starting to show the tell tales signs of sludge, which the car is notorious for. Any recommendations?

+1 No guarantees in life, but late model Japanese is your best bet. 4-cylinder models for the best mileage.

Pick a retired 3 y/o corolla or civic from enterprise.
7-9k 30k-40k miles.

I bought the exact same car for my wife almost a year ago. I would say go through and fix the sludge issue, because it is a wonderful car for long drives. Very comfortable, 27-31 mpg on highway, plenty of passing/merge acceleration (thanks turbo). Yes, the Japanese/Korean/Chinese cars will get you there, but with a decided lack of style and comfort. Their engines are good but the rest of the car is meh...
Of course this is just my opinion... P.S. the sludge issue is not a difficult fix unless you already have damaged internal engine components (at that point it is game over). I went through mine when I replaced a faulty clutch, since I was "already in there" with the front subframe off to facilitate the clutch job. Use only top quality oil, the best oil is cheaper in the long run than any sludge repair.

Matt has the right idea. I still love the Saabs and I believe that a reroute or a shielded test pipe will help alleviate the sludge problem. Perhaps I am even grateful for the bad rep as it helps to keep prices depressed and cars less common. Keeps my chance of getting into the wrong car in a crowded parking lot.

I just bought a Saab 900 SE to do the very thing you describe. Fix the sludging issue with the 9-3 and call it a day.

Honda or Toyota doesn't have to be a soul crusher/Civic or Corolla... Accord or Camry are pretty nice cars, then are then Mazda/Hyundai offerings I do like the idea of keeping the SAAB thou....
