Bet that car would be a blast at an auto-X if you keep the RPMs up.
Looks like my dog going for a leak!

But seriously Dennis, that's a killer find. Even if it has 13 years of back fees! (Does it!? Or is it registered PNO?)

Do you have a day job? It can't be much. Knee deep into cars all the time.

Cheers,

G

No children then.

I wouldn't want to miss mine, but the day comes when they need to get in the garage too and get beaters fixed up together with yours truly.

My older one wants a Vette, BTW.

I said, a stick will be ok. I think a C4 may be in the budget.

Would you advise anyone to buy a car that had sat for that long?

Of course, you're not naive to that, but its still likely going to be a $$ venture.

If you do get it I would do a timing belt before trying to start it. The timing belts are those engines acilies heal. If it brakes the head is shot or at least has to be rebuilt and after sitting that long I wouldn't trust it at all.

Dennis is in SoCal. You probably can't find a place that has better storage conditions. Low humidity and likely close enough to the coast for moderate temps. The only thing that weather is hard on is the rubber due to ozone.

This is much superior to any barn find in a damp environment and a family of rats living in it!

Yes, it appears to be in quite excellent preserved condition due to being covered as well as parked under a car port, so no UVs or moisture have gotten to it. That would be tragic in this case, I can't tell you how many other beautiful old cars I've seen that were ruined while parked.

My photography is not the greatest but the interior shots really tell the story. It basically looks like a new car inside with no fading or weathering at all. Pretty amazing.

The mechanical aspect would require some attention but again, the storage conditions really favor it. There isn't even any corrosion present on the battery terminals, which of course should not have been left connected in the car.

It's like something a VW Scirocco freak might see in a dream, then the alarm clock goes off right when you're about to turn the key and go for a drive.

Beware of the electrics in those early '80s VWs.
My ex father in law had a gen1 Scirocco. Left him stranded several times. He bought it new and the problems started less than a year in. He replaced it with an Audi 80.
I had an '81 Golf GTI in the mid '90s. It had a battery killing short in it I could never find. I'm an electrician by trade. I ended up keeping a dead battery under the hood, and a live one behind the drivers seat with a set of jumper cables.
It was a neat car around town. Every time I drove it on the Autobahn something broke. I wish I could have owned it when it was new.

Dead shorts are not uncommon in cars in general, usually they are reasonably easy to isolate first by circuit and then by individual accessories or components within that circuit. It's strange that no one could ever diagnose it, did you ever take it to a good auto electric shop?

My limits WRT DIY repairs are mostly limited to newer vehicles that require specialised software and equipment for diagnoses. I'm not too intimidated by this analogue machine.

I seem to be inadvertently moving into being a specialist at re-animating low mileage cars that have been sitting in hibernation for years. I have another thread going about my Mitsu Evo, which I own and am working on in contrast to this Scirocco which is merely in my cross-hairs. Climate conditions are definitely working in my favor.

I would not hesitate in buying that car. It looks fantastic. And even after sitting all this time, it can be refreshed to be a driver. Or more than refreshed to be a show car. It would be a head-turner at just about any watercooled VW event.

I'll almost certainly buy it if he's willing to sell and I doubt it will be cheap. I'm not too worried about it, though. How many 32k original mile, one owner Mk1 Sciroccos can there be out there?

I know man. I have been posting on that thread too. Reading your car threads is like having a friend in college that gets all the hot chicks!

I do remember some ugly crap you worked on, some MB with heads off where I wasn't at all jealous. Even the 914, if you stole it or not, left me cold. But you have had a good few weeks recently!

You must have a lot of connections. The good deals are never on CL - they area always through friends, family and acquaintances.

Cheers,

G

LOL - tell us how you really feel, Speeder!

What's with the rust on the hood, but no rust elsewhere?

Its my car actually, Its a first year Scirocco. Lots of one year only oddities involved with it being a 75. Just takes education, I guess. Im a early water-cooled VW guy more than I am a porsche guy! But nor am I close minded towards the market price of a 63 911.

Per the ad its foam that was put inside the lip of the hood from the factory, 75 only.

It was done from factory at the time to prevent vibrations.

Longhoods have the same foam which is why the bumper holes always rust out.
