Yeah, who knows. Things are worth whatever someone, (the market), is willing to pay on a given day or week. IDK how long Flabmx's car has been listed for sale but apparently no one on Samba agrees with his valuation of it so far.
As for the Calloway turbo, I think that it would add to the value under any circumstances because it was a very desirable period upgrade plus it's completely removable/reversible and the car was not hacked in any way by its installation. As well, it's worth serious dough by itself and would actually sell on eBay or Samba. But I hear you about originality in general. I would not mind having the OG rims that came on the car.

Ha! Oh well, can't be cool with someone who doesn't know what a car is worth in the first place so that he has to post pictures on a forum and ask. Obviously you don't know what you're talking about. Please buy this "barn find" its really not that desirable at all. Thats like buying a fat chick bug. Low miles or not its still a fat chick. Only thing it has going for it is the fact its got a callaway kit (that also has missing pieces). I can find 1978-81 roccos all day.

Don't listen to him. Low-mile early water-cooled VWs are hard to find. They are harder to find in good shape. A rare one like this is almost unique.
OK, they don't have much value in the broader market. But for someone who wanted a Scirocco, and wanted a good one, this car would be THE CAR. I will tell you right now: I bought a MKI Scirocco with 161k miles on the clock, drove the crap out of it for 15 years, and sold it for almost as much as I bought it for with 330k miles on it. I loved that car to death. I would buy this Calloway Scirocco in a second if you didn't want it. I'd push you down and stomp on your head, in fact.

I can actually see how an early, chrome bumper Mk1 Scirocco could be more valuable than a '78-'81 if both were in equal, mint condition. That I do not dispute. But did you look at the photos of his heap? Holy schit. It's an $8.00 car.

I know you'd tell us fairly quickly if there were any movement on this....but you're a busy guy that keeps many irons in the fire...so I'll still ask...any news?

Nothing yet. Kind of forgot about it, to be honest. I'll update the thread if I hear anything.

For whatever it is worth, this car was purchased for roughly 5k. It needed a bunch of maintenance work, and it had been sitting for 5 or more years, but as you can see, it is beautiful.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/773349-check-out-awesome-scirroco.html?highlight=cool+scirocco It was purchased from the original owner, who bought it brand new, and paid more for the callaway conversion than he did for the car. Just a ref point. We were all trying to figure out why he sold it so cheap.

A quick search for recent sales history of 83/84 GTIs has me shaking my head a bit with sales north of 15K. As previously stated, MKI Sciroccos that are not rusted to death, have dents, bad paint, interiors, etc, are rare as hen's teeth nowadays.
There obviously isn't as big of a following as 911s, but give me a 10K MKI Schitrocket any day over a 911 costing twice as much. Wasn't always the case, but the 911 fanboy scene exploded and many mere mortals like myself have a hard time justifying the money. That said, the thing that got me into VWs initially was the "Poor Man's Porsche" concept, and it ended up sticking. When you look at the relative values of these cars, it is about time they are showing some serious upward trending. Cheers

As the enthusiasts are more disconnected from the driving experience in modern cars, they're looking back to where they know they can find what they've been missing. Seventies, '80s and early '90s sports cars, hot hatches, etc are where they're found. I wish more of them were treated well and saved.

So Flug "joins" in 2010 but waits 4+ years to post and his first one takes a poke at Porsches.....on a Porsche BBS. Spambot?
I find it strangley coincidental that just yesterday I searched for this thread for an update. But Denis had not posted any so I knew not much had changed, else he'd tell us.

Need to follow up on this one some time, but it's just sitting where it's been. Not going anywhere.

Howdy, not a spam bot. I am not much of a forum poster these days but I read a lot. Again, I am a MKI VW enthusiast and ran across this thread and thought it was cool there was some cross-interest.
I was a little taken aback by the attitude given to the floridabmx guy about the asking price of his car, I felt it was needed to point out the current rarity and growing value of these cars. The rust on his hood is awful looking, but as he explained, very common on all 75 VW's because of that foam **** they put in there that collects and retains moisture. Not a real big deal or expense to rectify. In any case, his car was about as nice as you're gonna find today in original condition, and for people that like these cars or grew up with them, 5-6 grand is not a lot to spend even if it needs some love. *deleted comment, was a little riled up earlier* Quote:
