I don't know the movie, but that looks exactly like the Scirocco I owned in the mid 80's. Mine only had a 4 speed and ran around 3700 rpm on the interstate. I ended up trading it for a Rabbit race car. Traded that for a Scirocco race car. Started to convert that to a production racer, never finished it, instead ran a Gti for 2 seasons, ended up selling that and buying another Scirocco. I ended up selling that to a guy who wanted to ice race it, he ended up rolling it and last I saw, about 10 years ago, it was sitting behind his barn. Probably not much left of it.
Part of me would like another Scirocco, but then again I think the only reason I had it was because I couldn't afford a Porsche. |

From 1978's "Dawn of the Dead."
The survivors holed up inside a shopping mall, and drove this car inside the mall, tagging 'walkers' along the way. ![]() This was a full two years before Jake and Elwood did it in 'The Blues Brothers'

I get an email today saying that he talked to brother and has a price for me. I call and a deal is made. It is mine. Can't wait to get it running. I think that the exterior needs a respray, not that it's so horrible but it has some chips and other paint damage and the car is so nice in general that it deserves a slight resto. Still has the same 32,080 miles, hasn't moved since 1999. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nicely done! Sweet little car. Hope it’s not a major pain to get back on the road!

Congrats Dennis. That is one hell of a clean Scirocco.
That was my dream car back in 84. With my new dr. lic I test drove one at the used car lot on the cornet of Sunset and Hillhurst across from the Vons. I walked there from School up in Los Feliz just to drive it. The typical harry chested, gold chain wearing owner throw me the keys and said, drive it and you will fall in love with it for only 1800 bucks. It was not meant to be because no matter how I tried, I couldn't the thing over 50. Ended up with a 1980 Celica later that summer. GEt it running and show us more. I am excited to see more of this little jewel. |

What is part availability for that car ? Does it have a supportive online forum like this one ?
Very cool car, and a throwback to my youth. |

The decal is terrific. Don't take it off . . .
I wouldn't spray it myself. Just get it running and enjoy it. Is it the 1.8? |

Great score! I always wanted a Mark I or Mark II Scirocco. As Porsche and BMW owners I think we're spoiled with parts availability (even though more of it seems to be coming from China), I don't think it's quite the same for early water cooled VWs. Let us know what you encounter.

Very nice!
I guess that car was just waiting to be yours, playing hard to get.

Neat! I had that same color, but with a cloth interior, in the mid 80s. A 1981 S model.
It was a really zippy, fun car. |

I'm hoping that the turbo and associated parts are all good, though. No idea, I've never seen a photo of one with small bumpers. It would be nice, I guess but the bumpers don't bother me. They are just part of the car and era. Quote:
Unfortunately, the car needs to be resprayed. There are a lot of bad chips and scratches from storage plus it was resprayed when almost new to change the color slightly(?)...I'm going to put it to factory correct. I like original paint as much as anyone but this car doesn't have it in the first place. Thanks for all the comments! I'll definitely update this thread as I get it running. Bad fuel in tank is the probably the biggest immediate challenge.

Im not sure if you're up on CIS, but before you do anything, make sure that the control piston in the fuel distributor isnt stuck. Seen it happen many times. Fuel turns to varnish and the piston locks up.
Plenty of posts on the 911 board for testing and freeing it up. Badass score. That car looks awesome.

Thanks. I agree, good chance of CIS distributor issues.

Very nice
I would not respray that, keep it original, it will only be original once.

Nice score. That interior is amazing. You know, most other places in the country, that interior would have molded over by now.
Are you sure on the paint? That it is a total respray already? If yes, then repaint indeed, otherwise, I'd prefer original paint with corrections and flaws over a respray. As you know, a good factory level repaint nowadays will set you back a lot of money ... G |
