Any Scirocco fans?

WANT!! I had one for a couple of years back in about '83-'84. I've missed that car since the day I sold it. Mine was a lighter shade of silver. If I could score one, Id jump on it in a heartbeat.

Yes, BBS wheels in really nice condition, no curb rash at all. The tires even look good but they are ancient. If the turbo isn't stuck for some reason, it should be like new. Fingers crossed on that one.

Good question...I guess it's whatever Calloway used? I'm hoping that it survived the slumber. I'm also assuming that it's a nice low-pressure set-up since AFAIK they did not change any engine internals. I'll be curious to see what the boost numbers are.

I drove a friend's MK1 way back when it was almost new. I remember being impressed by it's cornering ability and overall balance. It was a real blast on twisty mtn. roads.

You never ever see a Scirocco any more - like I've seen one in the wild in the last five years.

I also never see most of the water cooled VWs of that era - VW Dasher, Audi Fox, even original VW Rabbits are an uncommon sight.

Sad - I thought those were fantastic cars and if they were still made today, I'd want one. Simple, light, good fuel economy.

I cannot remember the last time I saw a Mk1 Scirocco driving in L.A. or anywhere else. early 911s are common in comparison. Heck, so are Ferrari Daytonas, or just about any old, rare car you can name.

There is a reason for that, though. Sciroccos never sold in large numbers like Rabbits and Jettas and to be honest, as cool as they were, they were economy cars at the core and were not built like Porsches or BMWs. If they were modified for performance, they were either crashed or just blew-up and all of them rusted their way to the junkyard in the rusty parts of the country. They were not special enough to store in the winter, people just drove them.

That's what makes this car so rare. It's modified but never abused and has extremely low mileage. It's never been in salt and it was stored properly for all these years. It may be the only one like it left in captivity.

There's gen 1 Scirocco rotting away about 45 minutes from me. Never been that guy to go to the door and ask about it. I know of an excellent gen 2 with a diesel transmission swap for shorter gearing that I can buy for a reasonable price but it's not the same car.

Cabrio is entirely on hold while I build the paint shop. been thinking of just getting rid of it actually.

Plenty of posts on the 911 board for testing and freeing it up.

hahahha..where were you when i was getting my 1975 911 running. this was the exact issue i was having and didnt know zip about.

i cleaned it and i started right up. easy peasy.

you will know it is stuck when you try to manually lift the air arm thing.

My architect cousin bought a new 1979 Scirocco in late 1978, I think the first year of the 5 speed manual. He was 6 years older than me and we were very close.

I stayed at his house in the Bay Area when I was returning from running rivers in the summer in college...gratis, the cousin bonus. I was only there a few days a week, tops...usually Sunday night headed out Tuesday.

I was driving a 1972 BMW 2002 at the the time that, a little rough, was in great mechanical shape.

While a relatively short time frame between model years, the differences in the cars comfort, performance and handling was really something.

I get it, Apples to Oranges: My Mom bought a 1977 320i that was the equal of the Scirocco, but my cousin actually let me drive his car

It was, as you said, Denis, just so out of reach for me at the time, lust be damned.

Your pictures really highlight how well the design has held up. It looks great.

It is CIS but of course there were several variants or versions of Bosch CIS. They all work similarly but are also each unique in one way or another.

I've started to do the work to re-animate this sleeping beauty, so far no bad surprises. I removed the valve cover and it looked like this, think the PO changed the oil very often?





I changed the timing belt yesterday, the one in the car may have been original w 32k miles, (second photo is new belt):



Engine turned easily by hand after I squirted some ATF in each spark plug hole. Fuel tank was empty, or at least as empty as someone could get it. Fuel pump is toast, getting a new one tomorrow or Monday. Fun little project, I'll try to update this thread.

Such a good looking car. Some Euro versions seem to have flush headlights, but I prefer the look of the four round ones. It does need a bumper tuck though.

when i was 15 getting ready to get my license, i had magazine pictures cut out and stuck on my wall in my bedroom. i never did get one

and i can say that i have never seen a scirocco in person in new york in all these years. not a single one, any generation.
