It was done from factory at the time to prevent vibrations.

So what would your car be worth if it was in much better condition, ie. no rust, nice original interior, etc.? I was not trying to insult you or your car as much as expressing genuine shock at its value, if in fact that's its value. If it sells in a short amount of time for your price, that is its value.

I know that these cars have a certain following but with all old cars, it becomes a case of restoration costs and hassle exceeding the price of a good example. IOW, it's only worth it to buy the best one you can because it's much cheaper than restoring one. Also, there is the (related) issue of how much of a restoration industry exists for the car because it can be impossible to properly restore regardless of $$.

Are mint early Sciroccos that rare? What do they bring in the marketplace?

Also, there are no '63 911s. A 1964 titled 911 would be extremely rare, as in you could spend your entire life looking for one with an open wallet and never score.

That actually sounds about right, from what little I've seen in the recent past.

From what I have seen with other cars, price depends a lot on the question if zse Germans are buying them. I would guess the the Mk1 VWs are bought and brought to Europe. They had a huge following over there and they are all rusted and run into the ground by now. $10k is nothing in Euros, if you can get a CA or AZ survivor that can get the H (historic) plates which is low in cost.

That is just it, not many seem to come up for sale, were they all crashed, rusted out, where are they? I for one am pulling that you get this one, but be warned about the turbo lag & torque steer when the turbo does kick in

Well you didn't post any interior pictures and nor is there any information on it being a callaway kit or not, which id assume it is. Its not a early mk1, but the much more common later style. (78-81)

Bought a 1979 brand new upon graduating from college (yes, I'm older). Still remember that the car payment on the loan was $234.08 per month.

LOVED that car. Could throw it around like nobody's business and yes, it handled well in the snow.

I too will warn you about the electrics - I had a starting issue that was eventually diagnosed as a bad board. If memory serves, there was eventually a recall for that problem after I'd spent hundreds of $$ on 'fixes' and gotten stranded several times.

Mine only had a 4-speed and I often wished it had another gear, but it ran like stink, particularly with only 1-2 people in it. Wasn't quite as peppy with 3-4.

Sadly sold it when I moved to Chicago and had no where to garage it.

Hope it works out for you. Did I mention that I LOVED that car?

Actually, I did post interior pics and verify that it's a Calloway turbo kit a few pages back. It also had 32k original miles, one meticulous owner and it's in amazing, mint condition.

I think that you're suffering from severe delusion if you think that your car and this one are worth the same. Absolutely bat-schit. Your car does not look to be in even medium fair condition.

Here is a great condition, 1988 VW Scirocco 16V. If you're looking at this, you probably know what it is. 5 speed, A/C, Sunroof, Tornado Red (sprayed original color) rims, original tear drop wheels included, detachable faceplate stereo with all new speakers and sub . Newer brakes clutch, ECU, plugs, wires, etc. It's runs fantastic and it's daily driven. 136k miles but certainly doesn't act it. Driven 1000-2000 miles a month. Call or text 314/608/0000

Ok...not really looking to buy one other than the one this thread is about. I'm sure that a nationwide search would turn up a few in various conditions.

I'm also confident that it's not too hard to figure out what the one I'm hunting is worth. Just take the value of an average one in good condition and add the appropriate surcharge.

Rust is a deal killer when it comes to the value of any collectible car, as well as general condition in other areas.

It is a cool car, but will someone drop $15, 20k, 30k on it? It may be a very non-linear curve, price vs. condition. And it can go either way (flattening out at a certain price, regardless of condition, or going through the roof when approaching perfect condition, like that MB you posted on the SL500 thread).

One though I had was if the turbo kit helps or hurts this car's value. Are there purists that want an all stock car? Would it be better to return it to stock and sell the turbo separately? It sure looks like it could be worth a couple grand by itself.

To get a good market value, I would look for pristine examples sold on Ebay. Do some digging in Deutschland too - here an example:

European prices are usually a good indicator. That car on mobile.de is as pristine as it gets for Germany and dealer price is 14k Euro. That's $20k, but it is at a dealer and already in the Fatherland. To make an import worth someone's while, a comparable price may be $15k?

So, looks like $15k would be doable. There are more examples on mobile.de but the one I found was the closest to my basic knowledge about these cars.

I do however know that I would never spend $15k on any Mk1 VW ...

Hard to say what that car will bring or what is needed to get it in top running condition. I'd suggest submitting on BaT and the appropriate VW forums, and probably list it on eBay with a safe reserve. Should be worth at least $10K, and I could see it bringing double that, maybe more. The air is thin with cars like this.
