affordable Cayennes?

After looking at a 996 yesterday, my pipe dream of DDing one was squashed by my more reasoned better 1/2. I have had my eye on a Cayenne for a while but now I see the facelifted 08's (there were no 07's apparently) are coming for sale with the 8 cyl S models going for mid 20s.

I know there have been some 955 owners here over the years....thoughts? What to look for, etc? This would be a general everyday car...haul dogs, kids, bikes and wwith a V8 in case i don't sell my track car and feel.like towing it somewhere.

Thanks

Can I ask why not the 996 as a DD? I won't argue that my Cayenne is very comfortable for the every day, but what turned you off on the 996?

I considered 2008 cayennes in the mid $20s and looked at quite a few but in the end I ended up with a 2008 X5 4.8 which (IMO) was slightly more car for a few $K less.

My son is a freaking giant and wouldnt fit in the back. This would be a car that Id need to take my family more than just the occasional ice cream. I can do that with the Targa.

I agree the X5 is a little larger for the same year and I do love my 325 but I think the cayenne's size wins out for me head to head. I prefer smaller cars.

My wife and I just sold our Cayenne for a Toyota Highlander.

This is the best decision I have EVER MADE regarding a car purchase in my life.

I loved the Cayenne for what it was, beautiful fit and finish, top notch interior materials, and it drove beautifully. There are many other vehicles out there that serve the purpose much better and in a much less costly fashion. Example: $389 Porsche dealer oil change versus a $34 Toyota Dealer oil change...

Keep your Porsche Passion for what it was originally born from...

I don't want to get too far off course but I'd be glad to further divulge why I feel this way. PM

I had a thread on the topic about a year ago, there were some good responses that should help.

It's the little things that get ya. We had the power drivers seat tilt back get stuck, that was a grand all said and done. Then following that we got locked out of the back tailgate, that was another $800 or so. That's all the recent stuff on my Cayenne. So it's running about $3400 a year in maintenance so far.

Why so costly to maintain? Crappy components or poor engineering? I can deal with the low fuel mileage of Cayennes but not the nickel and diming on repairs. I've always wanted one but have been chased away by the reputation of money pit.

Just the opposite here. I started looking at X5's. (meh)

The control systems on the 955 are phenomenal. Super comfortable seats and cabin - even long hauls. My wife loves taking the Cayenne.

Biggest down-side is fuel - so thirsty. Usually filling every ~300 miles.

Porsche dealer cost.

Sheesh, oil changes.... $389? That's rape, right thar.

They'll charge $80 for installed wiper blades - easiest blades I've ever installed.

Comparing the X5 to the 955 is sorta bad vs bad, neither is exactly a 4Runner.

I had a '96 4-runner (actually shouldn't have sold that one - 4 cylinder and stick). I have a '14 X1. One is essentially a truck, the other is essentially a sports-ish car. Both can carry all the stuff I need. Which one would I rather drive? No question. Which one is cheaper to own long term? No question. That doesn't make one "bad" unless you have strong preferences one way or the other.

In the context of maintenance and repairs, both count as "bad".
