I also looked at 2008 Tacomas with similar mileage, but couldn't afford them.

My CPO warranty has a month left, and one of my buddies has a scanner with a fresh software update, so I'm feeling great about the X5 so far. JINX

Also, my dad's got a great set of tools, so I'll be fine.

I considered 2008 cayennes in the mid $20s and looked at quite a few but in the end I ended up with a 2008 X5 4.8 which (IMO) was slightly more car for a few $K less.

Just the opposite here. I started looking at X5's. (meh)

The control systems on the 955 are phenomenal. Super comfortable seats and cabin - even long hauls. My wife loves taking the Cayenne.

Biggest down-side is fuel - so thirsty. Usually filling every ~300 miles.
Is that highway or just all around. I don't actually drive that much during the week. I figure I could do it in a nice car...

I echo what Island says. But, while fuel mileage is not good, you can certainly get relatively decent mileage if you keep your foot off it. We bought ours almost two years ago with 61k on the odometer. It has been flawless, except for the Nav/stereo unit that took a dump. $700 fix from the authorized Becker repair shop back East. Just like anything else, you got to be into it though. A Toyota Highlander makes much more sense, but it may not be for the enthusiast. My wife yearned for something sportier than her Honda CRV. That Honda was fantastic, but certainly no Cayenne. The tradeoff is well worth it for us. Oh, can you do your own maintenance stuff like oil changes, air filters, shocks, struts? Yes? Well then, you will not be nickel and dimed by the Porsche dealers for basic repair and maintenance stuff.

Oxymoron - a cheap Porsche. There is no such animal. You can include a MB too. I owned one and it is fine under warranty - beyond that yikkers!

My 4.8 X5 gets around 18mpg if I'm careful, and about 13 if I hammer it.

There are LOTS of cheap Porches. Maybe not new ones, but lots are cheap to drive.

Of course!

If I wasn't concerned about maybe towing sometime, I might just get an X3. The X5 had gotten too big. No highalanders for me.

By that logic, I'd have never been able to afford any Porsche or BMW. But I've never paid more than about $80 to DIY the oil change on my 993 and it's the most reliable car I've ever owned. It's never been to a stealer except for a recall.

I had a 99 4Runner Limited for 15 years. It was a great vehicle, and relatively cheap to maintain. I will never drive a Porsche or a Volvo again because they were the opposite. If Porsche and Volvo engineering and quality are so great why do they cost so much to maintain? Here is the truth - they are no better, they just cost more.

Volvo?

Anyway, both Porsche and MBz are highly tested before they hit the market. Other makes do a Pasta test -throwing it to the wall (of consumers) and seeing if it sticks.

Also, from a design and materials selection, both Porsche and MBz are superior to other typical offerings ...with MBz in the clear lead for serviceability.

To say they are no better, they just cost more is pure hogwash.

Also, try to compare similar years - as auto standards/requirements force all sorts of Rube-Goldberg solutions/complexity into the design.
Also (2), "Trucks" are exempt from many of those requirements... making them simpler, and easier to service/repair.

My neighbor had a 500 series MB he got rid of because it was a POS. I saw a 7 series BMW in a parking lot with a 2 page list of warranty repairs laying in the back seat. Don't tell me they are better. Toyota, Honda, and recently Ford have better quality control.

Bought my 2004 Cayenne Turbo used (about 50k miles). It has been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. Towed cross country multiple times. Put another 60K miles on it quickly. It looks and runs like new. Very roomy and comfortable. Handles and accelerates like a guide missile. Fantastic fit and finish. Mostly had very minor repairs that I could do myself. If you take it to a wrench, it is little different than any other Porsche.

I loved my Cayenne, very reliable for the years I had it. I only got rid of it due to wanting more space for camping.

08 and up should be fine with a good service record. at least an S, turbo would be the best with a GTS between the two. If you can find a good low mile one with good service records and the options you want (I love air suspension), go for it (after a PPI of course)

Happy hunting.

Rick Lee and island911, that's not my logic it's simply fact.

Fact being, people unlike you gents and myself (the privileged soccer moms) who can't (husbands can't) do the work are getting themselves into a wickedly costly adventure.

Mine never went to a stealer either...which is why the "service now" light never went off. BUT, if it did, my maintenance costs would have been $4800 in 9 months of ownership, they were $750+ my time, still ridiculous. Mind you, this was a one owner car, driven by a privileged stay at home mommy, religiously serviced at the same dealer until a month prior to transaction.

The thing was/they are costly junk. I've 6 friends who have owned Cayenne's and each one is quick to tell their horror stories to others and steer them away from making the bad decision they did.

Oh, and the Highlander goes farther on $60 fuel than the Cayenne did on $100
