I believe the Mustang had the same engine. Both the Mustang and Spitfire were very beautiful but the later Mustangs with the extended range to accompany the bombers were a huge breakthrough in WW2. If ever I had a choice of eras to live in WW2 would be up there. What an exciting time to experience but pretty dangerous.....

The Mustang got the Merlin because the British had the idea and made the swap! Replaced the weaker Allison and thus the P-51B was born.

In my humble opinion the Spitfire is the most beautiful piece of machinery ever built.

Through the fence. He was flying out to an airshow elsewhere.

Although yes, the first aircraft recognizable as a Spitfire was a seaplane, it was so because it was designed as a racing plane for the Schneider Trophy.

Great shot.

You've sent every one racing racing for their Boys' Own....(or google as its now known...)

I built a model of this as a kid....Supermarine 6B, Schneider Trophy contender

Here's another one. I think I got it from another thread some time ago.

I just realized it is the aircraft I shot at Conningsby.
Lovely

Mitchell didnt commence the design of the Spitfire until 1936.The Schneider Trophy Supermarine seaplanes raced in '34 and '35.
The Mustang was designed in 6 weeks apparently to meet a UK design requirement.
Most if not all Mustangs probably had Packard assembled Rolls-Royce Merlins.
The Mosquito in my view was an even better looking plane than the Spitfire, and considerably faster.

Me too. (albeit a framed Barrie A. F. Clark poster in our rec room) The purists will have to excuse the prop on the hanging model - I searched for a 4-bladed unit but had to settle for the 3-blade from a 'gas' powered model. As for the real thing, I know of more than a couple of guys who'd give their 'left nut' for some quality seat time in one of these beauties, me included.

Hot damn, that's awesome. I agree about the Spitfire being one of my favorite airplanes of all time - along with the F4U Corsair and the P51 Mustang....

How many Spitfires are still in flying condition?

Various different model of Spitfire were fitted with 2,3,4,5 and even 6(actually 2x 3 bladed contra-rotating) bladed propellers.
There are supposedly about 40 airworthy now.

I couldn't agree more.

In every genre, there are a mere handful of machines that truly capture the imagination. In aviation, the Spitfire is certainly in that very exclusive club. What a machine...

JC (Top Gear) is kind of a boob, but reflecting on that piece I can't imagine what he must have felt - being intelligent, English, over England, in a Spitfire...I give him a pass

- Lets not forget the Spitfire's brother in arms, The Hurricane - That machine (and even more, radar) was more of a factor in winning The Battle of Britain than the Spitfire.

- although the biggest factor of all was the men that flew them....
