who has a relationship with someone they have never met? that is not what "online dating" means.

We know a lot of single women in the their 50's and 60's.....Many have no retirement plan and no health Ins if they do retire....Most live paycheck to paycheck. Looking for someone to take them under their wing.

If their Profile Pic includes a pet or grandkid, RUN.

I also have been out of the dating pool for about five years...
Computer dating is pretty much like real dating... you have to shift thought a lot of nut jobs to fine a jem.
My wife and I were on the same computer dating system... but she was in Oregon and I was (we now both are) in SoCal.

I am 100% pro-online dating. I should re-phrase that. I'm pro-online meeting people that would lead to a lasting relationship. However, I don't think online dating is any more humbling than traditional dating - in fact, the oppposite might be true. If it wasn't for online dating, I wouldn't have met my present wife - no way, we didn't live in the same area (about 200 miles apart). I was going through a divorce (not my choice), after 17 years of marriage and 3 children, and I felt the need to talk to another adult (ie, a woman) in a strictly platonic relationship. After all, my ex was already spending alot of time with (ok - living with) who would be her future husband. Anyway, I guess I am fortunate that my new wife (Linda) was only the 3rd person I had talked to online. We just hit it off right away. She is a gem - really! She is definitely much more traditional than women these days. She takes such good care of me and my children - sees me off to work each day, lunch in hand, has dinner ready when I get home. Keeps a spotless house, doesn't waste money, asks me before spending, proclaims that I am the head of the household, etc, yada, yada, and so on. Linda is totally 180 out from my ex-wife - which I met the traditional way. Strangest thing is that we often are thinking the same things at the same time - it's almost unreal. Life (and yes, the sex) is now great!!

So in summary - online services are a good thing - your chances of finding someone perfect for you are increased exponentially. So stick with it, and you will likely be rewarded with someone who is perfect for you.

Freakonomics has a podcast or two on the subject of On-Line Dating - and what to put (and not) in your profile.

I think you knew what I was talking about, but in case you didn't, maybe you can understand it the way june82000 says it:

Like most, I have a few divorced friends that have ventured into the world of online dating.

One gets laid like he is in a women's prison with a handful of pardons. He says it can get a bit 'Play Misty for Me' at times, but he isn't looking to get married and that he's gotten better at separating the wheat from the crazy.
LOL. A buddy of mine is the same way. He's not much to look at but is a reasonably successful single guy that owns his own home, CPA with a good career, etc. He's also never been married, so he doesn't have a damaged goods label on him. Sometimes he'll end up in a relationship for months, sometimes he'll end up hooking up with a MILF that messaged him that day. I think he's also not seriously looking to get married, so it works for him.

Had I not married a woman crazy enough to tolerate me almost 12 years ago, I would definitely try online dating. I think of it like this - say you go to the bar and there are 100 women there. You judge them just like they are evaluating you, so let's say there are 10 that you are interested in. Of the 10 that you then talk to, you get one number. That's step 1 in the real world dating process. Now I'm not a beautiful hunk of a man like motion, but I don't recall having the women beat down my door when I was a single man. Personally I don't think online is really any worse than normal dating, because they both suck.

Hey, JB. Reports of my demise are greatly exagerated.

Haven't forgotten about you. Getting my order together so I can place one large one.

After giving it more than a week, I'm now getting dates at a 3 out of 8 rate...But I'm also only reaching out to a handful of women on a daily basis.

We'll see how it goes. The first few days was a harsh introduction though...
